I just replaced the altenator with a tested altenator for 20 bucks that was working perfectly, all of a sudden after not running for 5 hours it screeches like i never heard its a high tone of a screech, my neighbor that it might be the water pump but that pu,lley thing was moving, but after like 10 min of going 10 mph coming home from my girlfriends house the screeching went away, which was weird but my neighbor found this black gunk on the altenator and says that is the belt shavings or something, anyone got any ideas what it could be and how to fix it, im going to go to autozone to get my old altenator tested to see if that one is ok or what, thank you for your imput. Belt too loose? Whats the tension on it? Is it a new or old belt? The shavings sound like its too loose...

you better hope to god it's not the timing belt shavings. check the tension on the belt and also check the pulleys and see if the bearings are shot.

That black gunk is probably alt. belt shavings. Hopefully your timing belt is behind a cover.

I bet its a tension issue.

I would bet good money it is a tension issue... I had the same problem...
Another thing I have found as a tried and true fact... don't use aftermarket belts.. go to the dealership and get an OEM belt.. for some reason it just works ALOT better. Also as for how much tension... tighten it down to the point that you can twist the belt about a 1/4 turn.. but not too tight...
Basically tighten a little at a time until the squeeling stops.
If you did a search you would have found this squeeling is a common DSM thing... like a "calling card" if you will.. :)

it cant be just the tension, because it has been tighten and yes granted it was loose just a little bit, but this screech isn't just a normal screech, it seems like the alt almost siezes up or something, this happend before and i bought an alt of ebay, i tested the old one out, and its perfect, so? would heat reallly be the issue right now? or what, what else would cause belt shavings besides being to loose, it wasn't to tight so is there anyhitng else?

Yeah it's not a tension issue i can assure that. I think it's heat coming off of the turbo and o2 housing both heat shields are gone, this happened on my brothers 2g eclipse. The rapid heating desstroys the alternator. 2 brand-new ones on my brothers car taught us that one.

mmmm how bad of a deal would it be to get the heat shields for 30 bucks plus shipping?

Aaron! I just thought of something. My new engine has the heat shields. I'll give em to you cause the won't fit with my manifold and turbo.

wait, how come your 1g didn't have the alt problem my car is having, wouldn't having performence manifold and turbo make it even hotter?

My alt. went on me last week. My friend helped me replace it. My belts or pulley squeals really bad but it only does when the car is first started and driven. If I let go of the gas it quiets or if I reach over 4000 rpm's it will get lower. I usually let the gas go and then press it gently and goes away. Its so loud. Is there any kind of belt dressing that will actually help and not make it worse or eat the belt up? I will try tightening it up a little and see if that helps. All my belts were replaced in the winter. They aren't Mitsu though.

that is what happend to me, and the belt snapped lol so hopefully it doesn't get to that stage for you, like it says in the rest of the post it may be just getting fried due to heat, do you have heat shields? aready on your car

I will also add... when I had a non OEM belt on it also had alot of the belt dust... If you look at a non OEM and an OEM belt the ribs in them are different... on the non OEM belt the engine side of the belt was wearing out... I had the OEM belt on for a few months and it ran great with NO wear... I think it has to do with the ribs...

It could be a heat issue but personally I don't think that is it...
If ya got about $13-$16 try an OEM...
