91 Cutlass sup running problem

I know I have seen a similar problem on here before but now I cant find it, anyways,
I have a 1990 Cutlass Supreme SL, I had a used tranny put into it and after I picked it up and took it for a test drive, it worked fine for the first few miles and then the engine started to cut out when I did a fast excelleration just like you turned off the key, but it would restart right away, after a few times it would not restart. I checked fuel pressure and at first there was very little but it I turned the fuel pump on and off using the wire by the relay the fuel pressure would come back up to what it should be. Now here's the question, yesterday, my wife went to take the car and it started ok and drove ok, But, she noticed some smoke coming out of the stearing wheel so I am assuming that I have a problem there that is causing the fuel pump to cut in and out, but is it more likely to be the ignition switch or a short in one of the wires.
Any input would be helpfull before I tare appart the stearing colum

I'd have to think you have a short in one of the wires. The ignition switch inside the column is actually only a lock the switch itself is located on the lower part of the column. The fuel pump problem could be a bad relay located in the power control center under the hood. I would change it if the problem continues.

Thanks for the suggestion on about the relay, but I have all ready tried that and it didn't change anything, I did take the steering wheel and the upper end apart and did not find anything that looked burnt.
is it possable that the throttle position sensor is going bad?

Just to add to my earlier post.
The smoke from the steering colum was from the turn signal switch, not supprised but now the turn signal's and brake lights work ok.
but I still have the killing problem, I have looked at a lot of other post's on here and so far I have checked the wiring from the fuel pump to the relay, replaced the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure sending untit and because I had one laying around the throttle postion sensor. and I did find a repair in the fusable link by the starter that was shorting out against the frame that I fixed.
But I still have the killing problem, it does it when it want's to, it doesn't have a regular pattern to it, sometimes it's when I'm really getting into it and some time's just with a little excelleration.
any other ideas on what to try next? is it possable that it has something to do with the tranny that was just put in?

I really doubt it but it is possible. If the TCC solenoid is sticking it can cause this problem because the engine has to work too hard to keep running. Unplug the plug on top of the transmission (should be blue in color) and try the same thing. If the TCC solenoid is bad then this should cure the problem. Let me know what happens.

Tried unhooking the TCC and it made no difference.
the more that I drive it the less that is seems to be doing it, and when it does it's not as predictable as it had been, I had thought that maybe a fuel injector shorting out but when I have had them go out in the past they don't recover.
The last test drive I did after putting new plug wire in to get rid of a miss the car had I drove it about 40 miles and she killed twice, once at around 77mph and I was able to put it into nuteral and restart it the other time was at 42 mph and I had to stop on the side of the raod before it would restart.
One thing I did notice that it didn't do before the tranny was put in (I also have an 89 cutlass that doesnt do this) was that there seems to be a spot in the shifting when I put on the cruise control(or if I hold the speed steady) that it want's to shift from drive into overdrive but instead of shifting it just hang's there and almost reminds me of when you lug a diesel engine, if you let off the gas a little it will drop back into drive or if you push down on the peddle a little more it will go into OD.
any ideas about this and is it possable that the 2 problems are connected.
Thanks for all your time and the help you have given me so far

It is possible that the computer is not shifting the transmission at the proper times and is causing the problem with it shifting late into OD. As for the car dying I am concerned about that. One of the items that will cause a car to stall like that is a bad Crank position sensor. If the sensor is going bad it will cause the engine to shut down but it will restart for a while. As it gets worse the car may not restart.
As for the transmission you may want to have the shop that put it in to check the shift points and reset them with their computer.

just to update,
I ended up unplugging the TCC and running the car that way, the shop that put the tranny in for me shouldn't be doing tranny's, but now it drives ok.
as for the dieing problem it went away on it's own I still think it might have been something in the tranny, being it was used maybe it sat on the shelf too long and took a while for things to loosen up of something. but as long as it's running I'm not going to worry too much and hopefuly I'll buy something newer before it acts up again.
Thanks for the help

Hey I just thought I would add to this link because it listed my old problem and everything that I have changed out so far, but Now.
I've been driving this car for a while now with no problems, everything has been working, until
I got home from work last friday night and parked it, I didn't drive it on Saturday or Sunday, went to leave for work monday morning and it barely run's idels rough until it warms up then idels ok until you try to give it the gas then it dies. like it is out of fuel, after it runs for about 1/2 hour you can open the throttle about 1/4" under the hood any more then that it dies but will restart no problem.
Any ideas?????????
