I have a 1988 ranger with a 2.9 liter v-6. My problem is it has a no start condition. Here is what I have found

-It will run if I spray starting fluid through intake
- it's not getting power to the inertia switch but can't find out why
- fuel pump works if connect hot wire it fuel pump relay.

any help would be appreciated

You may need some wiring diagrams to see exactly how the fuel pump is getting powered, and work your way back until you run into power. There's where your problem will be. It may just be a matter of replacing the fuel pump relay, but it could be a dozen other things. The fuel pump relay, I believe, should be under the hood, on the passenger fender. You'll see 2 relays there, one is the ECC and the other is the fuel pump. I've also heard of people finding these relays under the air box. The fuel pump should have a green plug. Test it before replacing it. Let me know if you need any information reguarding how relays work. I also believe I do have the wiring diagrams for that truck as well. Definately not getting any fuel.

I have already replaced the fuel pump relay, but also, when I run power to the pump to turn it on it still wont start any sensors that could be telling the computer not to open the injectors. because like I said if I spray starting fluid in the intake it will run

I'm looking at the specific wiring diagrams for that year.

That engine is multiport injection which means all 3 injectors per side fire at the same time. The ECC power relay turns on a lot of the positives going though the main harness. Where all these positives connect, this is called S125. The ECC relay is triggered when on start or run.

The fuel pump relay is triggered from pin 22 on the computer and positive from S125. S125 is located in the main harness, right where it comes out through the wire wall. You'll find most of these red wires all connect to S125. It's literally just a spot in the harness where all the positives connect. I added a wire for a mass air flow sensor there when I converted to MAF.

The injector pins are 58 and 59 on the computer harness. They are white and teal. The injectors get positive from S125. From the fuel pump relay it goes directly to the interia switch.

If it's hard wired and you're not getting anything past the injectors, either the wire from S125 is damaged, the white or/and teal wires are damaged, or the computer just took a crap. It may also be a bad ground. Computer's rarely go, but I've got a 88' speed density xlt 2wd 2.9 a4ld computer that I would ship to you for the cost to ship it, if you find that you need it. I put a cam that's way too big in my 88, the old ECC couldn't cope, I didn't even attempt to run it. So it's basically useless to me. Worked fine when I swapped. Has 98k on it.

Hope this helps
Pete

I checked all the red wires and none seemed to be broken, I unplugged the EEC relay and all terminals have power with key on, and two shut off when key is turned to start, but I have no way of checking to see if the relay is working. also is their any other symptoms or anything else I can look for to see if the computer is fryed.

Thanks
