A y-pipe fits between the headers and the main catalytic converter. All aftermarket y-pipes are for off-road use only because they do not have precats. The stock y-pipe contains precats. Removing any working catalytic converter is illegal according to federal law and this includes precats.
The aftermarket y-pipe makes more power by removing the precats and also because it is mandrel bent which reduces exhaust restrictions. The stock y-pipe is not mandrel bent and is not built for optimal flow.

Luckily though I believe the only function of the precats is to reduce emissions when the engine is just started. After warming up I don't think they actually serve any purpose, and all emissions reductions are done by the catalytic converter solely. (Could be wrong, however)
I have not installed a y-pipe but have a friend who has passed emissions with one for a while now in MA. Of course regulations may very state to state...:right:

all because of emissions.

Oh yeah, the precats are for emissions, however when you get an emissions test, they usually test the car after it has warmed up. And since the precats are only there to work when the catalytic is cold you can pass emissions with a y-pipe...
[however, yes a y-pipe is still illeagal]
