There's a 383 in my future

Well I've decided on turning my 355 that's in the car now into a 383 stroker. The main reason for deciding to go with a stroker instead of overhauling my 406 is becuase the 350 block in the car is a 4-bolt main block and my 400 block is only a 2-bolt main block. I think 4 is better then 2, lol.

Anyways, I'm going to go with a 383, probably start on it this fall after the racing season is over, unless I get on a roll and make 3 straight finals again, lol.

My parts list will be:

-4-bolt main 350 block bored .030 inches.
-Eagle cast steel 3.75 inch strock crank for a 350 block
-Eagle H-beam steel 5.7 inch rods
-Crane Timing set
-high volume oil pump
-all new bearings and rings
-Either SRP or Mahle dome pistons (either will be 14.2:1 or 13.0:1 compression, and reason I say either is becuase my heads are either 58cc or 64cc chambers, and that determines the compression ratio)
-somewhere around .650 lift roller cam (same one in the car now, I may buy a Lunati .640/.640 lift roller cam though so I will know for sure whats in it, and to get a lower RPM powerband)

Then of course my heads (Pro 1 steel heads, fully ported, 2.08/1.60 valves), intake (Edelbroc Victor Jr., fully ported), and carb (Proform 750 cfm).

Thats my plans as of now. And as for my 406, it may very well wind up being a 377, lol. Becuaes if the crank that's in my 355 is a steel crank, then it'll go into the 406 when I do overhaul it, and that will make it a 377 stroker, lol. If its a steel crank though. If its not, then my 406 will still be a 406 (unless it has to be bored a little more, then it'll be a 408).

YES! That's awesome, i want footage of this engine being put together and running to!!

*drools at the thought of strokers*(and destroked ones)

Lol. Well, I'll take pictures for sure. I still dont have a way to record it so that I can put it on here as of now, but if I can, I will.

Cool. Will it make as much HP as the 406 did? How about ET?

It should. Acutally, it should make more becuase its going to have higher compression. It also should make similar torque (which is what 400s have plenty of) since it would have the same stroke.

Of course, you know how engines and performance goes: they don't always do what they should, lol.

As for my ET, when I get it together, I would think it'd atleast run what the 406 did, but to be honest with ya, I think it should go faster. I mean the 406 had flat top pistons with maybe 10:1 compression. When I build the 383, it'll have dome pistons with atleast 13:1 compression. Now they will be slightly smaller (406 and/or 377 has 4.155 inch bore and 355 and/or 383 has 4.030 inch bore).

I dont think it'd be as strong as the 12.5:1 406 that used to be in it (in my uncles car now). It ran a best of 4.26 with that motor (its ran 4.09 twiced in my uncles car--big weight difference between the cars, lol, 2 tenths in 330 ft!?!?, i'd say his is ATLEAST 500 lbs lighter), but typically would run 4.30-4.33 in my car (4.10-4.12 in his car).

So I'd say a 13:1 383 should be able to knock out a 4.30, and average 4.35-4.38 in my car. And then again, who knows, it may barely break into the 4.40s or even 4.50s, and then it may go 4.20s, lol. Its hard to guestimate becuase no two engines will ever be the same, and that flat top 406 of mine did run really strong for what it was.

I just want it to atleast run like it did (best of 4.40 and average 4.43-4.46). I think 4.30 is the perfect speed where I race because thats fast enough to move alot cars around (give the spot) and to run with the really fast cars (4.0hs-down) but still slow enough not to be inconsistant and to not have to worry about stopping it if something goes wrong (there's a creek at the end of the track where I race, lol)
