Weird starting pattern (already tried search)

98 4wd blazer is new to me with 100,000 on it and having some issues starting. Often it will crank when you hold the key forward but not start. I've found that you have to bring the key back to entry position, try again (crank) and then repeat one more time, usually starts up right away on the third try. Sometimes on the second try or even right away. That's why I'm confused, it seems to be totally random!
I've even tried turning it just to accessory first so the pump comes on a bit before I try starting it and sometimes it works and then starts right away and other times not. It has never not started, it just takes a few tries. Someone told me this is a typical GM thing, but that doesn't sound right...
I also tried giving a little gas while it's cranking but it doesn't really seem to make a difference. So right now I'm using the start on the third try method. Any ideas, experience with this or suggestions, I would really appreciate a reply - I searched and read a bunch of previous posts but it doesn't seem to be the same issue. Thanks!

First thing to do is replace the fuel filter. Maybe a new air filter is warranted (open up the cover and look at the filter, is it dirty?). You might want to also replace the plugs, as I think 100K miles is about the recommended useful life for them. Take a look inside the distributor at the rotor, if worn, replace it. (ditto for the cap).
All of these items are routine maintainance parts, and should be replaced if they look bad. If you have problems after going through these items, repost and we'll dig deeper into fuel delivery stuff.

have you noted that the dash or idiot lights come ON before trying to start? if the dash lights do not come on immediately when the key is turned on, then the ignition switch is going bad.

The lights come on with no problems or irregularity so it doesn't seem to be that. Thanks for the idea though.
Thanks for the list to check also - I'll do that tonight!
