Nope...I've helped pull one from the top though.

Oh you backwards man you...

I suspect it's easier to disassemble the whole front crossmember from the chassis than to try to shoehorn the motor outta it's little cubby hole.

Something to remember if I ever pull mine.

Now how do you get the engine out from under with the lift in the way?

GM did not build 4th gen F-bodies with the do-it-yourselfer in mind.

curse you sticky that was my insightful comment!

yeah I saw on HP TV they were working on a mid 90's Camaro and they said GM designed these engines for the car to be lifted over it rather than the engine pulled....

I dont know what kind of lifts you guys use, i'm guessing four posts? But we use 2 post lifts with 4 arms that you put under the frame of the car. Very supportive, and much easier to use than 4 posts. We haven't had any LS1 engines that need pulling out, because well...that's just unheard of, an LS1 needing pulled out for failure reasons. But we've had to pull many Northstars out, and that's the ideal way to do it.

Mr2 engines come out the bottom. What I did, is basically had the car on a lift, setup the hoist, dropped the engine on a crate, disconnected the hoist, and lifted the car up using the hoist.

Mine didn't fail. :evillol:

We used the hoist to get the car up high enough. Rear tires are on ramps.
Once the car is up high enough, put jackstands under it, and let the hoist down. Pull the hoist outta the way. Sounds kinda dangerous, but many have done it.

This is how I left it....since returned the hoist to its owner though.

402. Close enough though.

You know I will keep ya up-to-date.
Still a while away from being running again, but as soon as it is...I will have a video clip.

a little ot, but how wide are you wheels (and what tire width)?

Mr. Luos
07-25-2005, 02:57 PM
Normally 275/40/17's.
Those are 245/45/17's. Burnout tires. They were just on the front since the DR's were on the rears when I swapped them out. Cheaper to just leave them on those rims for now. No sense in putting the wider ones back on quite yet....not like the car is going anywhere.

Ah, how bout an instructional video!?

That would be so cool, AF's instructional video on R&R of an engine from an FBody. I know the removal part has already been done but i'm sure you could improvise somehow.

Well, you're on your way now! 402. That used to be known as a 396 BBC bored .030, lol.

I'm going to be upgrading to a 383 this fall.

Anyways, I bet your car will be a screamer for sure!

I've done it with my honda even but yes it makes LS1 cars 10X easier to drop.

I can't wait for it to go back up

Man that is just odd looking compared to the old blocks, lol. I had to look at it for a minute there before I figured out what it was!

What does the ports look like on LS1 heads?

Lol. They dont even look like Chevrolet heads, lol. Even the valves are set in different (just noticed that from the other pictures). They're laid out like Fords are (intake/exhaust, intake/exhaust, etc.) instead of like Chevrolets used to be (intake/exhaust, exhaust/intake, intake/exhaust, exhaust/intake).

The ports are different too. See, all of that looks backwards to me becuase I'm used to the 1st gen blocks, lol. Arre the driver side cylinders still 1-3-5-7 and the passenger side 2-4-6-8 or has that changed?

Either way, looks like there is still alot of room to open up those ports. You are buying AFR heads to go on the 402 short block though right?

Mr. Luos
07-26-2005, 12:50 AM
Yeah. Not 100% on the heads again.

The order is the same though. 1-3-5-7 is the drivers side, 2-4-6-8 is the passenger side.

That was from experience. They made Changing spark plug wires a task that takes about 2 hours..on a v6.

I wouldn't mind getting a 402 for the firechicken (or an LS1 for that matter). Where are you getting it from and about how much power are you looking at from it?

GM engines get shitty when they start messing with cylinder bank numbering for some reason. It's like a curse for GM to change that. Look at some of their V6's they tried 123L 456R on... Someday though, they'll change it on their V8's and i'll get to prove my theory to the world...i hope not though...

LOL. Well I'm a little disappointed in the LS1's head design myself, lol. That's nothing like an SBC head of old. Looks a lot like that off brand of engines (I consider Ford an off brand for high performance engines, lol).

Oh well, lol. So Mr. Lous, what type of heads are you considering now? I dont know if they make them for LS1s or not, but if they do, I'd reccomend Dart Pro 1s.

AFR's!!!11!!!

Mr. Luos
07-26-2005, 10:13 PM
I am still looking at AFR 225's. But the fucking price....

TSP has some good flowing heads, as well as TEA.
I am thinking anything that flows over 310cfm at .600+ lift will be just fine.
TSP = Texas Speed. They are Precision Race Component cnc'd.
TEA = Total Engine Airflow. One of the top GM head porters right now. They take GM stock heads, and make them flow 320cfm.

Hell....I got plugs down under an hour on my LS1.
And I am looking for about 480-510 RWHP with the LS6 intake on top, not the FAST 90mm stuff yet.
