is Tamiya rubbing/polish compound only for acrylic paint jobs?

yeah is tamiya rubbing/polishing compound only for acrylic paint jobs? this was my first time using it, and it was used on a testor's black semigloss enamel paint job. and it just seemed to make it duller.

is tamiya's compound designed for use only on the acrylic paints?

It is fine to use on both.
How long have you waited before you started to polish the paint.
Sounds like it may still be to soft.
Are you using a really soft cloth?

Tamiya compound isn't harsh enough, so basically you are polishing away without it cutting!
Go for something stronger, like a paint restorer, then go over again with the Tamiya stuff.

well its been awhile since the paint had been put on. i'd say about 3-4 weeks or so now. so i'm not sure what the problem could be. maybe it does need something harsher

this is my first post... Great forum!! anyways, i've been using tamiya's compound and it seems to work fine for me. I've used cheepo automovite polishing compounds from the auto store but i think the tamiya stuff works better. what cutting compounds to you guys use?

With my models, it appears that the longer you wait before you use the Tamiya Polish the better. My Acura ITR waited 3 months before I used it and when I took a picture of it in front of my house you could see all the windows and everything inside. My Evo V had 3 weeks and it was still good, but not as good as the ITR. The longer you polish the better it will get. I polished the ITR for something like 4 hours. :eek:

whoa you spent 4 hours polishing? but i thought the stuff rubs off paint, so didn't you rub off alot? :confused: eheh

It does rub off paint, but it takes a lot of time to do that. Keep in mind that that 4 hours was spent on the entire body. 4 hours on one spot would take off all the paint. I just kept polishing til I could see the perfect outline of the light and tiles on the ceiling. Also, my paint job for that car wasn't that good so that's part of the reason why it took so long. My Evo V's paint job was much better so it took less time.

P.S. the guys at my local hobby shop say you shouldn't use the Tamiya stuff unless your model car body has been sitting for at least 2 months. I don't believe 'em, tho. :silly2:

can we get any tamiya paint from Funan or plaza singapura?

some people on here have told me they polish the clean, not the paint. I polish both but have had problems rubbing paint off and messing up the car's look. But back then i would let the paint sit for a week, two tops. Now I let it sit for at least 1 month. I use Tamiya's polishes and "the treatment" wax. The best I could get out of Tamiya is a bright shine but very, very, very little mirror shine and that's when the polish has been applied and rubbed on. The paint then turns dull. Seems my models look better before I apply Tamiya's polishes. The wax bring back a shine but i've NEVER been able to get a mirror shine like Twist describes. What I do now is very lightly polish the paint and polish the clear coat more aggresively. It still hasnt given me the results I'd like but I guess practice makes perfect. I'm still trying to figure out what Im doing wrong or what im not doing enough of.
