I just recently bought a 1989 golf and am looking to make it faster. It has the SOHC engine in it right now and am looking at swapping it for a 1989 16V GTI engine or a 1991 16V gti engine. Which would fit better and which would be easier to complete. Do both engine bolt up to the original mounts. Also what other additional parts would i need other then a new wiring harness and ecu. im looking for any help i can get....thanx

If youre swapping a 16v onto a 8v you will need likely the whole engine bay stuff, i mean, the engine (duh!), fuel injection sys, engine mounts, ECU, and maybe wiring harness. Is a easy bolt on, either the 89 or 93 16v will cost as much as work. If you can get a 2.0l ABA engine, i will do that instead of the 16v. An ABA block will bolt right into the 8V head, and is a lot less work than swapping the whole thing. By the way, aba block is taller which gives you more displacement than a 16v. And those are easy. Just the block.

Check this addresses, for a good write up.

Good luck.
