lift for an 89

I have an 89 cherokee with a 3" lift. I Just bought some new tires but im not quite comfortable with the clearence with them. If anybody has any ideas for a cheap way to maybe get an inch or so more lift it would be greatly appreciated and i would feel alot better.

I agree. A 3 inch lift will accomodate 31 inch tires.
More lift is not always better. More lift often degrades handling, ride, and safety. The higher center of gravity often reduces off road ability.

Most serious XJ owners trim the front fenders a bit to get a bit more clearance if they already have a lift.

If you really must lift it more than 3 inches, look into a 'long arm' system. This uses longer front axle control arms with relocated arm mounts to give more lift, yet still preserve decent handling.

its an trail master suspension lift. How exactly would i do the fender trimming?

I am planning on gettin new shocks within the week. If i get stiffer shocks or longer shocks will that help any?

IMHO wait until it rubs before trimming. This involves a bit of trial and error, but the next time you go off road, keep an eye on the tires and see where they might rub. If nothing has rubbed yet, you may get away with no trimming at all.

As for shocks, with my 3 inch lift, I use stock Monroe Sensatrac shocks intended for a Jeep YJ. They are 3 inches longer than XJ shocks and they bolt right on. If you have not done so, you must use longer front brake lines, again, YJ lines are the way to go.
For the rear, stock shocks will do but 3 inch longer shocks provide better articulation. Try Rancho or some other shock intended for an XJ 3 inch lift.
