Progress: Jaguar XJR-14

After a few weeks break here is my latest project. It's a 1/24th scale Le Mans Miniatures Jaguar XJR-14. The curbside, late season version, LMM also make a full detail kit. As you can see in the second picture it is a very simple kit, not a lot of parts. But being resin quite a lot of prep work is required. My old web site is dead, so I'm now using photobucket.

Looks good so far. Are those fans at the base of the windshield? Do you have any pictures of the markings that will be on it?

I'm guessing Silk Cut? Excellent project. Any particular event you're trying to replicate?
What happened to the website? :eek7:

Yup, Silk Cut Purple (or pink!), something like the below picture:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/RallyRaider/XJR-14/xjr14_ppmagny_02.jpg
Not really going to do a particular race, but will be number 4 driven by Teo Fabi (champion for Jaguar in 1991) and David Brabham (cause he's an Aussie). Yes those are fans on the dash. I suspect they're a Ross Brawn quick fix to demist the widscreen.
Website folded after I declined to pay for it.

Finally laid some colour down. Had a hell of a time due to a new frustration - contaminated paint!
The paint was mixed by my local automotive paint store in cheapish Hi-Chem/Motorspray basecoat. When I went to spray it I was getting all these white flecks. At first I thought the airbrush might be dirty, but after cleaning it thoroughly three times there was no change. Just as I was starting to get really annoyed, by chance I noticed the bottom of the jar I'd stored the paint in had white particles on the bottom too! Having found the culprit, I thinned a big batch of the paint down and strained it through a tissue to remove the contaminants. Very messy but did the trick and spraying went fine after that. The finish is matt at the moment, will need a sealing layer of clear before decaling, then more clear after they've dried out.

Don't you just love working with those quick-drying automotive paints?
It's looking awesome already, lvoely colour. Did you eyeball the Silk Cut purple or did you have some specific colour mixed for you?

Yes those automotive paint are fantastic to work with. I had the shop eye match the colour to a sample in the kit. It is one of those funny colours that look different depending on the light, may even change when it is clear coated.

Nice progress.. I've just started to use automotive paints, and I too noticed they dry darn fast.. But I don't have a proper airbrush set up - no compressor so used a rattle can instead..
Odd colour, but it will look stunning when decals and clear are applied. I'll keep an eye on the progress..

Finally some progress to report. The decals are done and the clear coating has begun. Wasn't too happy with the LMM decals this time, the purple "swishes" are a bit blotchy and scratched. Looks okay, but doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. I thought about repainting them but didn't need the aggrovation off all that masking.

Looks great. did you put the decals on before clearcoating?
RallyRaider

Because the base coat was flat I cleared before decaling, then again after. Will still need another coat or two to smooth the decal ridges out. Some decals actually go over other decals so I cleared and sanded between them too. I wonder why it takes me so long to build models...? :p

I somehow missed this one Phil. I have a question, I noticed that recently you are using mostly matt/flat colours and then gloss clear, I tried that also but never had good resoults as the surface under the clear looks bumpy (top coat is perfect but colour under has a patern).
Is there any secret?
Great job on Jag ;)

Looking great Phil!
When you will get back to rally cars? :-)
About color, I presume that Phil using base auto colors same as me. They are mostly semi gloss. Just try to light wet sand it between coats and color will be even better.

Thanks for the comments guys. :)
Sasa, as Zeljko says these are automotive paints specifically designed to be used in that way. Perhaps just using any old matt paint won't achieve the same results? As with most tings in our hobby the key is preparation, make sure the primer coat is silky smooth before trying to go any further. Subsequent coats will not hide blemishes. I use lacquers which allow you to keep the coats very thin therefore doesn’t give much chance for lumps to form. Although you always have to be careful of "powdering" in corners and the like.
If the colour coat is matt then there shouldn’t be any reflection from it so the clear over the top will be the only reflective surface. Works really well on 1:1 cars. Although I’m just using TS-13 as a clear instead of fancy 2-pack urethane.
Tonight I sanded back the clear on the body, the decals are looking nice and smooth now. Will give it another coat or two in a couple of days. Then it will be time to start carbon fibreing the chassis and wings.
Don’t know about the rally cars Zeljko, not in the mood for them at the moment.

Haven't forgotten about this, managed to achieve a bit of progress this weekend. Had to strip and rethink the rear wing and how it is mounted. Vacformed windscreen was a very slow careful process but turned out quite well. I've set it up so it is held down firmy by just two rivets, still full length and visible in this pic.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/RallyRaider/XJR-14/Dscf5832.jpg
Setbelts and some carbon fibre decaling in the cockpit. The camera makes the belts look light blue, they're really much darker.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/RallyRaider/XJR-14/Dscf5833.jpg
Carbon fibred underside. I added the yellow kevlar after some nasty bubbles formed on the original stripey pattern. Not accurate bit gives some colour and variety. The screw holes will be covered by some thin plastic skidpads.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/RallyRaider/XJR-14/Dscf5834.jpg
Pretty basic kit but is taking me a while to bring together.

O u t s t a n d i n g l y clean build, Phil !!
Two questions:
1-Are the seat belts from Perfect Part ? (Beautiful)
2-Did you wear the driver seat with leather?

Thanks guys. :) This build seems a bit plain compared to the superb detailing work we've had here lately.
I missed Roberto's second question - sorry about that. No, I didn't do anything special to the seat, just sprayed it semi-gloss black like everything else. LMM mold it with some texture already.

Rear wing is finished. It is quite heavy, being all resin and metal. I hope the mounts are going to be strong enough to hold the weight.
