Had my rear-tyre burst at 60-70 mph

Today at evening, just pulled out of parents' business place and right into the 50 mph highway. I'm accelerating on the highway, right when I shift up to 4th gear, the bike is not pulling, anyway, the tach reads 6k rpm, some more throttle and go up to 5th, still it seemed the bike is lost its thrust and refused to move, so I go back to 4th, and it's much the same, rpm is high, the bike is travelling between 65-68 mph, but the bike doesn't feel like it's in motion. All the cars seemed to have switched from my lane (left) into right one and they're getting ahead. (Things are happening in rapid pace though).

Then suddenly the rear of the bike started wiggling right and left, and the front started flapping, constantly shaking its head, suffice to say, the bike is instable as I warned myself.

My mind is still calm, and I check the mirror, no one behind me, then slowly I start using front brake and lean a little to left, and gradually brake and lean all the way through to a side lane reserved for u-turns. Somehow I make it there (every thing is in slow mode now in my head), the bike had no engine braking, as if I pulled in the clutch. So I come to a full stop, and I figured may be while shifting or through some predicament, the chain must have broken lose and got caught or something. I check the chain, it's fine, front tire is fine, the rear tyre... completely flat, no air. And wheel of the bike was pinching out from the tyre. My folks don't own a truck, so I figured I have to make it back on my own. I try to ride the bike in opposite direction now maintaing slow speed, but nope, the front shakes violently regardless of speed, it'll be extremely dangerous with traffic coming.

So I cross the road and get to the pedestrian sidewalk and ride about a mile until I reach my parent's business place. I know a lot of passer by drivers had their eyes wide open when they saw fully geared up guy riding 400 lb bike through the asphalt at 5-10 mph, haha. One dude even honked me as I heading at the direction he was coming from.

When I made it back, I realized severity as I almost dropped the bike trying to turn it in the parking lot, leaning the bike was impossible due to rear cupping in. And caught a sigh of relief thinking good thing no one was behind me and I never used the rear brake.

I half-ass inspected the tire, and it seems perhaps a nail poked and made a hole, although the nail is nowhere to be found. Tomorrow I'm going to try to take it out and see it closer.

This is actually second time I got a nail in my rear tire, the first was on a brand new Bridgestone that I fitted on the FZR, and it happend in the same area, but I was coasting in nearby parking lot. With constructions everywhere (thanks to Publix coming soon), not surprised this time either.

I guess I needed a new tyre anyway, these Metzelers have 4094 miles on them, and the rear wore the most in the middle.

I am extremely surprised that even with the blown rear and erratic front-end, the bike still managed to travel relatively straight, without completely turning to one direction.

But geez.... having the rear blown out at around 70 mph with cages nearby, puts things in perspective.

So basically guys, be extremely careful in those areas with construction, especially on highway or freeway, and go slower even if it hurts your ego. The slower pace gives you time to react properly.

As for me... it hurts, especially seeing other guys ride into the wind, hehe.

excerpted from another thread:

Oh, another sidebar... Z and Blayne... if you post in any other forums on AF, don't be surprised if you are asked to cut your sig size down... a LOT. I'll let it slide b/c I think Blayne needs to get it up in a BAD way. ;)

you're right, may be I should save him from further shame.

but ouch aussie! now even tangie is roasting your chestnuts on open fire.
