dead battery
your alternarot was probably hooped and all the starts prior have drained the battery to the point of not being able to turn it over. Throw a set of jumper cables or a trickle charger on it and give it anothere go.

Are you sure you have fuel in the tank? Not just the guage shows some, but have you put any in there? Change the plugs and wires, thow some ATF in there, start it up. Be prepared for some smoke tho :P

because that could foul the plugs.

Do you see the bolded section there my friend. This simple thing indicates that you have gotten the motor to turn over.

How did you come to the conclusion that there was no spark? How did you test this?
Pull out a multie meter and start checking things because from the sounds of it you have an electrical problem.

alright i'm going to settle this score... lol

what HAPPENED...

previous owner lost keys to car, so he took dashboard apart and pulled ignition switch from key tumbler assembly... used a screwdriver to start the car since it wasn't being driven, what happened is the switch itself malfunctioned and is "off-key" ... the spring-loaded postion that is suppose to have power supplied to fuel injection and ignition system, and activate starter to crank the car is now just the "on" position, so you hear shit clicking (relays and such) but the car won't crank because the switch won't go that far... the car did start and run perfectly fine up until the switch decided to take a shit... its a bit redneckish and or ghetto, but hey when a new assembly from mazda is $232 you have to improvise....

so for a temp. fix i located another ignition switch from a 87GLU and acquired it and gave it to the owner, no word as to whether it worked or not... will post pics when its back running again.

could it be the mass air flow sensor. and how did you check for spark? Are you getting spark at both primary and secondary coils.
