VATS question!

Hello all!

I am new here and I am looking for information on the VATS system. I have a 1994 Camaro Z28 that I need to change the ignition in. I know the value of my key and so that is not the problem. Will I be able to just order another ignition from Chevy without them having to MESS with my car and charge me an outrageous price? Is there any where that I can order the ignition from? Chevy is telling me that I need to bring the car to them for them to program any installed ignition and that it will only take 30 minutes (and $400.00).

Can some one here please advise me on this?

Thank you, T

Hello all!

it will only take 30 minutes (and $400.00).

hit them with this..at that price their shop rate is $800/hr and ask what their posted shop rate is. When they say $80 (guess) ask how they arrive at $400 for half an hour of work then. The part isn't that expensive. Tell them you want an itemized (written) explaination of that price.

ive never heard of needing to reprogram for a key replacement. key fobs yes, keys, no. replacing the lock cylender will require taking the steering wheel and airbag coil off. removing the lock cylender, and harness, then reinstalling the new one. so long as the key has the same pellet resistor, it should work just fine.

 :grinyes:

Thank you to everyone for all of your help!!

SPECIAL THANK YOU TO 89IROC&RS!!!! I went down to the dealership paid $60.00 for a NEW ignition and $40.00 for the key and MY CAR IS NOW RUNNING LIKE A DREAM!!!!

I have been told by several dealerships in my area that I HAD to have the car brought in and that there was no possible way for anyone to replace the ignition and have it work without the ignition being reprogrammed.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!! :lol2: :icon16:
