My tranny :(

So the other night me and a few friends were in my car driving on back roads at about 2am. We take this 15mph bend at about 40 or so with no problem. Well, actually the only problem was, right in the middle of the bend. Not one, not two, or three....or four....But a whole entire fucking family of coons were right in the middle of the road! So instead of going off-roading, i tag all of them. So anyway later on that night when i started heading towards my house, i kept smelling gear lube. Finally get home and park it. Look under my car to see my tranny leaking out all of my full synthetic 75w-90 gear lube! All over my driveway. There goes a good $40. I thought maybe it was from them damn coons. So earlier tonight i finally got around to pushing the car in the garage and taking a look. Jacker her up, went under and there was gear lube all over everything. Crossmember, both drive axles, oil pan, just about everything. So i got the idea to go buy some cheap-o gear lube at wal-mart to dump it in and see where it was leaking from. Took about 2 quarts until it started leaking. It's all leaking from the bellhousing. Right where the flywheel plate goes. I think my tranny just shit on me. Why would it be leaking from that spot? Any help would be great.

Yeah i dont think raccoons would crack the bellhousing, have you hit anything else recently, like a rock or something? You had to have hit something, because bell housings dont just crack on their own without some help from foreign objects. I would just get it to a shop.

Well, at least now you have an excuse to drop in a LSD!!!

If its coming from up in the bellhousing where you cant see, which I'm assuming is what you are saying (not an external crack that can be seen), I would suspect the intput shaft seal. I change them myself, but its an assload of work. Requires complete dissasenbly of the tranny, since its installed from the inside in Mitsu's infinite wisdom. No dissasembly of the shafts themselves, but everything has to be removed from the case all the way down to the bellhousing. If you drop the tranny it should be easy to tell if thats where its coming from. FWD trannies are super easy to remove at least...

Edit> I dont think I've seen this seal cause a huge leak, more of a slow thing that would take a couple days to drain. But its possible, espeically if the bearing went bad. The bad news is when the fluid level drops too low that seal/bearing is the first to run dry. I had a bad passenger side axle seal leak fluid and ruin that seal in a week tops.

Before my last transaxle failure occured, there where no warning sign's (non that I noticed). Then one day I'm driving allong in 4th gear @ 60Km/h (37.5mph), and all of a sudden my front wheels locked up, causing the car to come to a sudden halt(Talk about whiplash). My first though was my ball joint and/or tie-rod dis-connected, but everything was perfect. I knew had a severe transaxle failure when 4 men where unable to push the car in neutral(even with clutch disengaged). The thought of this occuring on the expressway at high speeds sends shivers down my spine.

yep, a nice size crack in the bellhousing....now my question is....how the hell did this happen!?!? coons couldn't have done this kind of damage. i still find it weird this all started after hitting them, though......

Wow...that is pretty :naughty:

But hey on a happier note you now have a very large paper weight.

Do you have any idea what the hell caused that?

ok i was wondering if a tranny for a 90-94 FWD turbo would fit in my 97 spyder. here is the link for it...

not sure if the ratios are the same or if the mounts are the same. thanks for the help.

I don't know if it's the same for manual trannies, but there are several different versions of automatics that aren't interchangable. Also, I'm not sure if it's the same for manual trannies, but this is the coding system used on automatics (Mitsubishi):

1st number: F or W (Front/AWD)
2nd number: 3 or 4 (Number of speeds)
3rd number: A (Automatic) (M for manual?)
4th number: ## (Series of relative torque)
5th number: # (Version, design change)

(Above info from here, scroll to bottom: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/atfaqs.htm)

I suppose if it had the same code it would be the same. Then again, you could call Mitsu and they'd probably be helpful.

On another note, I'm impressed. That's a big hole. Hope you get it fixed up, good luck.

The 91-94s are interchangeable, the 90s are wierd.

That hole was more than likely cause by a piece of gear tooth or similar getting in between the front diff and the case, then getting punted out because there is no room for extra parts in there. Very common failure. What could just be a gear replacement becomes much more involved becuase of the pieces floating around and doing more damage.

Edit> Just noticed the context of the 1g tranny conversation. You can't use any 1g trannies in a 2g. The 1g cars have the front and rear motor mounts on the block. The 2g puts them on the tranny. So with a 1g tranny you have no front/rear motor mounts. ;)

95 gsx racer are you sure about the mounts being on the block cause i just looked at my 93 and it didnt look like that to me

kjewer1

Yes, I'm sure. 1g front and rear mounts are on the block, 2g front and rear mounts are on the tranny.

Yes, I'm sure. 1g front and rear mounts are on the block, 2g front and rear mounts are on the tranny.

That is correct, and the bottom mount on the centercross member holds tranny and block. On the 4g63NA neways.

This tranny ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Eclipse-4G63T-4G63-T-FWD-Manual-transmission-MINT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33733QQitemZ799032 7252QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW ) looks like the mounts are on it. Even though it says for a 90 - 94 FWD 4G63T. It looks exactly like mine, except in better condition. And it has the arm on the rear for the rear roll stopper. Should I email the guy and ask him for the model # and ask him if it'd fit a 2g?

kjewer1
08-01-2005, 02:20 AM
Thats a 2g transmission ;) If the mounts weren't enough of a giveaway, the speedsensor seals the deal. The 2g uses that electronic pickup that comes up through the rear mount, while the 1Gs used the mechanical cable drive. I don't know how anyone could trust a seller that doesn't even know the year of the part he is selling... :)

dang man looks like someone took a elephant gun to your tranny....

if something was lose in their wouldnt you have noticed it?? like gsx said its a tight fit in their so if something did get lose wouldnt you be able to tell ?

kjewer1
08-01-2005, 02:38 PM
The tranny can lose a gear tooth and have it kicked out the side of the case in the same milisecond :) Sometimes you know in advance, like with center diff failures. Other times it just eats shit and there is nothing you can do about it.

Yo judging from the look of the blow out on the tranny it looks like something definetly blew into the tranny bell housing not out of the bell housing. I'm sure that you already new that but what do you think was hard enough to punch through the bell housing and something that small? Idk just a thought, It looks like somebody punched a screwdriver through because the size of the hole and that it came from something foreign from the outside not the inside. I really don't know just a thought. Good luck

ok i e-mailed that guy selling that tranny on ebay.....his response - "You're right... I asked the previous owner of the car and his plan was to put a first gen motor into a second gen car, so I assumed the tranny was first gen as well but as you point out it is a second gen... I'll revise the listing to read accordingly."

so i'm thinking about buying it. i'm just worried about getting dicked over on the deal....example - bad tranny (cracked, grinds gears, etc), never receive the tranny, etc etc.....hopefully everything goes well.

Steve, I have a tranny just sitting in my garage. It's out of my '98 GS-T. No problems with it, only 45k. I bought a new one with a lsd in it, and I was going to list mine as soon as I cleaned it up. I don't know what you were looking to spend, but pm me if you're interested. I'm in Michigan, don't know what shipping would be to you. Good luck
