paint stripper?
If you do indeed have factory clearcoated alloy wheels, you should try a gentle machine polishing on them the same way you do paint. Try using 3M micro finishing compound with a waffle pad with no more than 2000 to 2500 rpm. If that doesn't help your problem, yes, automotive paint stripper works well for removing clearcoat. I suggest using a gel stripper, it's less vapour, and doesn't run. You should be able to see the clear lifting in only moments, but leave it sit for a few minutes. Then with hot water rinse and brush off with a stiff brush to ensure you get the most of it. What ever is left isn't much and can be easily sanded off.
Now you can do either of 2 things, you can just polish them or you can sand them then polish, because you will notice when the clear is off you can see what looks like and is, machine lines. Sanding them out leaves you with a better finished look.
To sand, the best way is to use a feather edger if you have air. But no matter wich way you sand it you should finish with 600 grit or finer. To get started though you should start with 240 grit to get a new surface, then clean up the 240 sanding with 600 grit, then your ready for polishing. Need to no more email me at [email protected]
