Lightbulb for transmission shifter panel

I have a 2000 Intrigue GLS, and the lightbulb that illuminates the transmission position indicator (P/N/D/etc) on the shifter doesn't work - thus I cannot see the shifter position at night. I removed the cover and cup holder around the shifter but did not see the bulb. Has anyone had this problem and has anyone replaced this bulb?

With the exception of one of the heated seat switches, all other dash lights work so it doesn't seem to be a bad fuse. Since the transmission position display on the instrument cluster is fine, I'm able to use this when it's dark.

Did you remove the face plate that shows the P/N/R/D/1/2/3? I don't have the car right now to check but I believe it is under there. The bulb no#194. I had to change mind about 4 months ago.

I have a '98 model and have had to replace the bulb at least once a year. I think its short lifespan results from its nearly sealed location and the fact its on whenever the ignition is on.

This is a common occurance apparently. Mine has gone out twice. The bulb is located directly under the shifter panel, must remove trim around shifter panel to access it. The trim is held in by retaining clips.

To replace the bulb you need to remove the console trim. Place gear shifter in N. Flip open the armrest/storage box top and you will see the two screws that hold down the rear end of the console trim, remove them and you can pop out the trim easily. Disconnect the connector to the traction control switch on the console, if you have traction control, and place the trim aside.

Now you'll see the 4 screws that hold down the shifter panel. Remove them and lift the panel a couple of inches so you can reach the bulb socket in the bottom of the panel. Turn the socket and take it out of the panel, and there sits the bulb.
