so i've been working out (lifting wieghts and doing cardio) for a solid 2 months now. I was wondering how often i should be increasing the weight that i'm lifting? im looking to improve my strength. yes i have done searches on here and stuff but couldn't really find anything specific about increasing weight. any help would be great.

just do sets with weight that you can ONLY do the planned reps. sets of 2-6 reps (no more than 6) are best for strength and size.
Ex: Say you can squat 200lbs 3 sets of 5 and cant do any more. the next week when you squat try to get 210+lbs 3 sets of 5.
just increase the weight when you are able to do more. when 200lbs. is easy 5 times ADD WEIGHT.
hope that helps...

That's the right concept. When you can do a full set (whatever number of reps you're doing) with the current weight consistently, then move up in weight.

I try to either bump up the weight or reps a little each time. Lets just say to make things easy your doing curls with 50lbs on a barbell and you can do 5 reps. Next week do one of two things, either shoot for 6 reps or slap a 2.5lb weight (or whatever the lightest weight you have is) and do your 5 reps. The key to gaining stregnth and building up your muscles is to lift more than normal and to change up your exercises every so often, if you dont change them up your body will get used to them and you wont see gains as quickly.

You will just tone up more if you do more reps. This is a good thing for everyday fitness.

Eh, to a certian extent. You probably wont see any gains in size or strength after a while but if you keep it at the same weight you will, like the oh so wise lame one said, start to tone up there. Go to the gym they have lots of weights there ;)

He might have to find someone else to go with him because some gyms won't let him in due to his age. I had the same problem, so I bought some weights. Just buy more weights, they're cheap.

Yeah we need a thread on how to gain weight. Right now I am on a 5000+ calorie diet because im trying to build up some muscle size....its hard eating everything in sight all day, i take that back, its freaking awesome.
But naruto, your not going to gain any strength or any size ever if you just keep using those 9kilo weights....maybe a little bit but not much at all.

i say dont do anything in haste here
first use the weights that you are given
after a while you will feel very comfortable using them
when it becomes too easy to use them then you can slowly switch to increased weights
