For Japanese FWD cars (Civic, Mirage, etc...), which wheels does the handbrake hold on to? I mean the front wheels or the back.

The parking brake applies braking force to the rear wheels only, no matter where the country came from, what drive orientation, etc.

Correct, EXCEPT for Saabs. Until quite recently, their parking brakes worked on the front wheels only.
