Quick question on tires

Right now I have 245/45 17s, I plan on ordering some new tires and I wanted to go a little wider. Do I just order a larger width with no change to height? For example 255/45 17. Also, I know the stock gatorbacks have pretty bad ratings. I have driven other cars with BFGs but not sure which kind. Does anyone have any recomendations on a good tire for under $140 a piece.

In metric sizing, the height is a function of the width. So, if you change the width, the height will also change. For instance, you said you are running a 245/45/17. Your tire height will be specified by 45% of 245. If you increase to 255, obviously 45% of 255 is greater than 45% of 245.

So plan accordingly.

Check out www.tirerack.com they are pretty reasonable on pricing and have a wide selection of sizes and brands.

What he said but to simplfy it a lil.....

The second number is aspect ratio wit is a function of width. So if the width increased but and the aspect ratio stayed the same your tire height would increase....

So to keep the same height as now and keep your speedo readings correct etc.., you may have to change aspect ratio depending on how wide you go. Also note this often will be just finding numbers close but not exact there is a lot of close enough is ok when dealing wit tires and speedo readings.

Awesome thanks guys, so basically its going to end up being something like 255/40 just as an example.
