Need help with A/C

I need to put more refridgerent in my '97 Ply Grand Voyager. I bought the can and a hose from the local auto parts store. I can't get it to screw on to the port on the van! (standing facing the van with the hood up the port comes out of a silver metal tube towards the back left-hand side of the engine compartment.) it looks like both the threaded canister and the female port it goes into are the same diameter. Am I missing something, or is this the wrong port?

Soe helpful info, the port/tube is basically at the top of the engine, not underside or hard to get to at all.

The filler hose you should have should be one with a quick disconnect fitting - not a screw fitting. To lock onto the filler port, pull back on the hose's sliding retainer, press hose on, and release retainer.

Make sure you are on the "low side" of the system. The "high side" is just a bit bigger but looks like it will fit. The low side may be up by the firewall by the airbox assembly.

if you have an older a/c system (R12) you will have filler stems that look like tire valves (a little larger)

the newer systems (134A) with have the quick disconnects fittings. or press and fit.

if you have the tire valves go back to the place you got the refridgerant and ask for a adaptor. R12 to 134A. should only be about $5

screw this on the low side ( closest to the fire wall ) (high side should be near the passenger head light. dont try that one! under hight pressure) use a wrench and just give it a gentle snug. dont over tighten! this will only cause the rubber seal onside the adaptor to mush and could obstruct the passage of coolent. then place the can hose supplied to the adaptor.
If you see frost or vapour around any of these joints when filling. STOP right away and give it just another little tighten.

Hope this helps you?

Oh yea, when done remove the adaptor.

sorry for the confusion. I have a 2002 GC sport. My low side is down low by the alternator, at least I think it is. It is the only port my 134a recharge pressure test connector will fit. Ford truck put their low side up high by the firewall.

You are on the wrong valve. The "low side" connector is on the silver directly above the conpresser.

Yeah, thats what I mean. by the alternator and compressor. The low side pressure gauge fittings will only fit on the low side.
