ok, im in the precess of purchasing an 01 gs. im not so much buying this a racer car, but more of a run around thats fun. im ususally more of a performance sedan guy after having two maxima's but i would like something smaller. Ive never owned a mitsubishi before, and i dont know anyone who has. i have a question or two

What is the reliability on these, (any 01 soecific problems?)

How easy are these to work on, is there any sort of special factory stuff?

How many, if any, recalls are there and on what?

Thanks guys. Im just going to check carfax and see how much everything will be and then im getting it.

BTW i love i test drove it and it is so much fun to drive.

im glad you didnt buy it as a racer car, b/c it will never be that without a good amount of money thrown into it.

as with most 'imports', the engine bay is pretty small. not much room in there(even thought the eclipse is technically not an import)

no recalls that i know of

minor problems with the slide springs that hold the seats in place. recall on the side airbags on the seats. bad tension springs holding the radiator hoses in place. particular rims are known for cracking/bending, and a few cases of cars were not sealant coated to prevent rusting. biggest problem if going for performance is a very intellegent ecu that makes major gains hard without spending alot of cash, and the weight (almost 4k holds) it back)

and the weight (almost 4k )holds it back)

The 3G is a fat pig but its not THAT fat. I believe the weight is somewhere around 3100 lbs.

since when did the 3G come with side air bags on the seats? ive searched for that one time and i couldnt not find where something stated that the 3G had sideseat airbags

My 3g has side airbags in the seat. There is a badge on the seat that reads SRS Air bag on it.

perna also drives a spyder, those are pretty fat!! coupe's aren't bad and the 4cyl weigh in dry at less than 2900lbs i think

I don't have a digital camera so I can't but they come out of the side of the seat. (out of the right side on the driver seat and out of the left side on the passenger seat)

so they dont come out toward the door? i have a lever on the driver seat for the lumbar support. it is above or below that?

OH one big problem w/ mine is the sunroof won't stay greased, and stutters, you either have to guide it by hand or take it in to the dealership to have them fix it once a week...for free but still

The 2.4 on the GS isn't exactly a firecracker... actually it's really, really slow. I used to own one :icon16: . I know your'e not looking for a race car, but it's slow enough to get annoying after a little while. At least for me it was. Get a GTS if you can, or if you want the drama and glory of mitsu's turbo four, get a 2G and become a performance coupe guy and buy a Spyder GS-T or a GSX.

if this person wants a turbo, he should look at the 4cyl. it is being proven right now that with great tuning, the stock block can hold 19psi.

and that website is a crook of shit. that site is filled with whiney crybabies who beat on their car everyday(racing) then have the nerve to blame it on the manufacturer.

Explain how

lose detached interior trim,
rocker panel decor plate corrosion,
broken hatch shelf,
lose rear hatch,
body rust,
strut leakage, and
cruise control failure

were factors emerging from the cars being driven hard? And youre telling me that all those people on that website drove their cars hard, and each one of them found the time to go to a public forum to vent their anger?

The fact of the matter is, the bastards at MMNA in Cypress, CA, fucked up. I have yet to see a black painted Galant or Eclipse 2000-2004 where the paint hasnt faded (THREE of these cars in my family, many many more with friends) or the gear synchros refuse to work. Mitsubishi fucked up so bad, infact, that they are now struggling to get back on their feet after a disasterous tenure of financial breakdown.

The quality of many cars Mitsubishi rolled out during the past couple of years has sucked, and 3G Eclipses are no exception. It started with rattley 2G interiors (thanks to the Chrysler plant) and crankwalking 7-bolts, to fading paint and rust in practially brand new cars. Which accounts for the terrible depreciation of Mitsubishis here in North America.

They have their new "best-backed cars in the world" scheme going on, thankfully, with excellent warranties, because they have realized that if they don't want to be swallowed whole by Toyota and Honda, they better get their pants on and start taking quality control and commitment to the work they put in their cars seriously. Before, if youe've done your reading, you'd know the transmission issues with the Magna (Diamante) where the car would unexpectedly lurch back a few feet upon engaging the reverse gear in auto. This lead to near death incidents and Mitsubishi turned a blind eye, citing driver error, though mechanic recognized the issue as design failure, as is crankwalk, and gear synchros, and strut leakage. All it takes is one bad experience for an entire motor company to be shunned. And Mitsubishi has given people a lot of reason to as of late. Having ignored so many issues, Mitsubishi is trying to revamp their scathed image by rolling out newer models such as the new Eclipse, and gaining cult ground by niche Evo models, and their new "driven to thrill" image should (I hope to god) help them back up.

I love Mitsubishis, and have always owned them. Mitsu has been amongst the most daring auto manufacturers out there, doing their own thing with excellent desings (90s was their best year) and turbo engines, at a time Honda and Toyota preached the goodness of NA 4s and cautious orthodox styling.

No amount of repair bills, lifter tick, oil burning smell, leaking cvt tops, bad gear synchros, and ratteling interiors can keep me away from my Spyder, but convincing an outsider or newcomer that Mitsubishi is a great quality car to buy... a tough deal considering how the assholes at MMNA have handled the past.

i never said the 3G didnt have flaws. but half of the stuff that happened to their cars can be avoided by taking care of the car.

yes...driving hard can cause some of those. did you know that by doing burnouts or spinning tires on a launch can actually crack the dash. this is b/c the wheel hop is so bad.

the problem with society is that nobody wants to take the blame for anything. i can guarantee you that 80% of the blown strut complaints where b/c they lowered the car on the stock struts(just like ricers do).

Ok the circled area would be where the airbag would deploy fro. It would be the same on the passenger side however it would be the side facing the door. Looking at yours those you don't have the side air bags. Sorry I was thinking of something else when you asked if it was on the side with the lunbar support

yeah that part is stitched in good on the side of the seat. since i dont have the "sun and sound package", maybe thats the reason i dont have them.
