These trouble codes right?

'95 Escort LX 1.9L (Manual 5 speed)

Ok, my check engine light comes on every so often, and my car generally runs like crap unless I am doing 50mph or more. (check engine light stays on at these speeds).

I ran the codes by jumpering the STI (Self test input) pin with the Signal return pin like it says in the manual, then turn the ignition to run with the car off, and I then get the following output:

522 - 522 - (Long Pause) - 1 - 172 - 181 - 186 - 172 - 181 - 186

I have no idea about the 2 522's at the start, or the single 1, but I looked up the other three digit codes in my Haynes Manual:

172: Lack of HEGO switches, indicates lean.
181: Fuel system at rich adaptive limit at part throttle, system lean.
186: Injector pulse width higher than expected.

I also checked these codes out on the interenet as regular ford codes, and they were listed as:

172: Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control
181: Fuel system was lean at part throttle Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control
186: Injector pulse width longer than expected or Mass Air Flow (MAF) lower than expected - Fuel control

Ok, so from what I gather it seems my O2 sensor is bad, and maby even the MAF sensor, but that may be a by-product of the O2 sensor problem.

2 Questions, would this be a correct diagnosis? and What does the 522 or single 1 mean?

I check the cheapest fixes first. Look for a dirty MAF sensor - just downstream of the air filter housing. May need a Torx bit with hole in middle. My MAF wire was black hairy gunk. Cleaned it (VERY GENTLY) with CRC electronic parts cleaner ($5 at autozone).

The 522 code is just "Vehicle transmission not in PARK during Key On Engine Off Self-Test." I'm not sure how that works with a manual tranny, but I wouldn't worry about that code.

Basically what I am going to do, is to replace the rear O2 sensor (as indicated) and to clean the MAF sensor with electronic cleaner. A new MAF sensor is $210 CAD so I'd like to avoid replacing it if possible. I will post results in a day or two.

Ok, aparrently there is no such thing as a rear O2 sensor in a 95. OBDII came out on 1996 and newer cars, and they had the second sensor. So, what I did was replace the O2 sensor, remove and spray down the MAF sensor with brake cleaner (degreases, deoils, and no residue), and spray down my ICS with brake cleaner as well for good measure.

I started it up, and right away I knew it was running better, no high idle or stalling. I took it for a 10 minuite run, and it works great now. No check engine light anymore either.

I kinda wish I did each thing seperate and tested inbetween so I could tell what actually fixed it, but I don't care too much, my car works great again!
