itonly does it ever now and then- it tries to start, it cranks but it never starts- it will get drove, then it will get turned off like at a store or something- he will go inside, come back out to leave and it won't start- its weird- it runs like nothing is wrong, and it is inconsistent- it is almost like something has to cool off or something, but it never shuts off or anything while he is driving- this is my dad's- has anyone ever had this problem or something similiar- he has replaced many parts- it is a 1990, with a ton of miles

have heard of a "heat sensor" behind engine near bell housing for transmission...
I can fax or email a schematic

...sorry...
meant to say "crank sensor" acting up from heat behind the engine...
but, you should look into other posts in this forum, as it appears you are not alone...
cracked coils, throttle positioning sensor, could also be a failing electronic control module, etc.
heat does play a harsh role under the hood..
hope this helps.

Hi
I had same problem- sometimes starts sometimes not - turned out to be the inhibitor sensor was not working properly.
This prevents the car starting in gear.
all you need to do is wiggle the transmission/gear stick back and forward (while it is in Park) while turning the key.

also known as the nss switch, but if it was faulty, the engine would not crank at all. I would say it is the crank sensor or pickup coil in the distributor, get yourself a spark tester and check for spark when it won't start, go from there.

the crankshaft sensor is located on the drivers side , on the bellhousing , right above the front driveshaft. Check this site hope it helps Dale [email protected] :naughty: :smokin:

Well I Replaced The Starter Relay, And Havent Had Any Problems Since, It May Have Been That Or Just Cleaning The Connections While Replacing That Did The Trick.

I cleaned the throttle body and checked the connections on the TPS, my shifting problem is fixed but the sometimes not starting problem is still there. Whats the starter relay? where is it? how much did it cost you?

Does it crank when you try starting it. Does yours have the power distribution box next to battery, if so the relay for starter is in there. Dale [email protected]

it does crank. it starts up after i pump the gas a couple times, then wait a lil bit then try to start it again with a lil more gas. I'm gonna replace the fuel filter b/c there is a chance that it could be clogged. I should also look into that starter relay, was it simple to swap?

the starter relay is located between the battery and the ecm\coil
there is a hot wire coming off the battery to it and a bunch of other wires, i dont know what their all for.would like to find out.
i could only find the part at the dealer 60$
but it has started every time since ive installed it, even when ive just drove up to the store amile or 2.

It's OK to change the fuel filter, probably needs it if it hasn't been changed lately. you should get a fuel pressure gauge put on it to check pressure. Have you tryed turning the key on and waiting for 15-30 seconds before you try starting. Dale

I too have had this issue with my 88 Laredo 5spd. 4.0L. I changed everything that has been suggested... turned out I had 4 leaking injectors, they bled fuel into the cylinders while it was shut off and when I went to restart it gave the same issues you are talking about because it was "overfueled". Leak test is easy to check, pull the fuel rail off. cyl key and watch for any injectors leaking. I had 4 out of 6 leaking. replaced all 6 . No problems so far (its been a year).
