I have a 87 ford ranger and I'm trying to find the throttle postion sensor. You see it not burning gas and a mechanic told me to check the throttle postion sensor but I don't know where it is. Can someone tell me where its at and if you have any suggestions about why its not burning gas.

I assume you're fimilar with the upper intake manifold. In front is the throttle body. The TPS is located on the passenger side of the throttle body. It has an a couple wires and a plug running to it from the injector harness. When in doubt, follow the throttle cable to the T.B. and look directly on the other side. It should be there, it only takes a couple screws to get out. The TPS is sort of spring loaded, so make note of that when you take it off, so you know to put it back on correctly.

I am not sure what he means about 'not burning gas'. When you take off the TPS, you'll notice that there is a flat spot on the butterfly shaft. This flat spot turns the sensor when you give it gas, like a screw driver & flat headed screw. I believe it outputs between 0-5.5 volts. It's sort of like a pot. If you need to test it, you can hook an analog (digitals are decieving for testing sensors due to the refresh rate of the LCD) volt meter to the wires that go to the ECC, and it should move smoothly within it's voltage range. Any sudden drops or 'dead' spots indicates a bad TPS. The TPS just tells the computer where you are on the gas. 0 = none, 5.5 = WOT. Are you getting a no start with no indications of fuel burning? I would be inclinded to think that no spark would be the issue. I am not sure if I exactly understand the problem.

When I start it I smell gas and you can smell it coming out the tale pipe.
