Help on ABS axel collars

I have a 98 taurus and the ABS Itiot light is burning periodically. I read another thread about the possibility of diry or cracked speed sensor collars on the front axels. I was wondering where exactly these colars are located. Are they visible from under the car or do the cv boots need to be removed? I looked and did not see them. Thanks for the help.

The ABS exciter ring is on the CV about 1/4" from the big end of the outboard CV boot. It's directly below the bottom of the strut tube, and directly above your lower ball joint.

Although it's unlikely that the exciter ring is causing your problem. Personally I've seen broken wires to the sensor (cracked, broken, corrossion causing intermittent signal response).

I'd recommend having it scanned. You should have a trouble code, and a distinct wheel the problem is at. I know some of the retail parts stores offer free or inexpensive code scanning. Good luck.

At least around here (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) the parts stores do not have the ability to read the ABS codes. That typically requires special software in a higher-dollar scan tool than what Autozone and the like use. If you go to one of the retail stores and they don't find any codes associated with the ABS, you may need to head to the dealer or find a shop that has an OTC Genisys or Snap-On scan tool with the appropriate software.
