Ordered my 160º thermostat

Well, I ordered my 160º thermostat, and I found that most everyone (Summit, Jeg's, etc.) was charging WAAAY too much ($8-$10) for "shipping and handling." Anyway, so I checked out ebay and bought one from

http://stores.ebay.com/Ramchargers-Performance-Connection_W0QQssPageNameZviQ3asibQ3astoreviewQQtZ km

$49.99 + $5 s&h. I'm cheap, and everytime I can save a few bucks, it makes me happy. I just thought I'd pass this info along to anyone who is also looking for a t-stat.

Cool. Let us know if you notice a difference. I've heard both ways and the reasoning I've heard supporting both sides makes sense. If that makes sense....

Anyway, let us know what you think of it.

I have had the 160 thermostat for almost six years and it is great!!! Temp rarely goes above 185, which is pretty good out here in the desert at 110 degrees plus.

does it hurt the engine to rn cooler? and all yoiu need is a thermostat, do you need to program anything else or just put it in and go?

Running it cooler does not hurt...it helps! I have run cars with no thermostat at all, and they did fine. Allen told me that the engine temp vs. timing table in the computer will adjust itself and no further tuning is neccesary for the t-stat.

is the thermostat built into the housing with the elbow. or does it come out of it. just wondering because 50 seems expensive for a thermo most cars are like 5- 15 dollars. thats my experience with 80's and 90's gm.

Yeah, I'm right there with you; I've never paid more than $15 for a t-stat on any vehicle (honda, mitsu, lots of SBC's), and I thought this was EXTREMELY high. Unfortunately, some ass clown in GM's engineering department thought it would be a good idea to build the t-stat into the water neck on these (99-02) trucks. The newer engines went bact to a design similar to the old one as far as I know.

another question I thought of.... How about in the winter? Does the engine warm up quick enough or even get warm enough to be comfortable inside and deice windows?

Worked fine in my Burb last winter. (Montana)

P.S. Got mine at Napa way cheaper.

You got a 160º thermostat for a 2000-2002 Suburban cheaper at Napa? The regular 186º thermostats there are $25, and they don't even carry the 160º t-stat for that year model, according to their webpage. If you have a 99 or under or a 2003 and up 'burban, you have a different (cheaper) t-stat.

Alright, here's an update: I ordered my t-stat from the afore mentioned vendor (Ramchargers) on Saturday, and I had it early today (Wednesday). Excellent vendor, and their shipping was the cheapest I found.

I know I keep going back to this, but on my old t-bird with NO t-stat, the heat would get noticably warmer than outside, even in the dead of winter. Look at it this way, the water going thru your heater core will be 185º-190º after the 160º is installed. That means the air will be blown over a heater core that is in that temp range into your cab. Sound warm enough to you? Leave it on long enough, and it will still fry your balls off.

sounds logical, i guess i will have one order in the next week or 2 when i get some extra cash. then i will hang on to the old thermo just in case but i keep all the old parts.

Sorry BW, now that you mention it I think I did have to go to the dealer for it. I'm sure I would have passed out if it was more than $25. I must be making to much money these days.

Anyway, it was for my '98 5.7. I had programed it w\High Tech. and noticed the best performance would be the 160 t-stat.
