Hi everybody, it's about time I got back to drawing cars again. This one will be a gift for my art teacher who I had for 4 years. so far there's no rendering done yet, just the outline. Any comments or critism would be appreciated.

Hi everybody, and thanks for the comments.

Girlbear: You should do a Vette. I'm sure it would look great!

Here's an update. So far I'm using about 4 different shades of blue, 4 shades of grey, white, brown (for the chrome) and some black. Btw, these are all Prismacolor pencils.

The hood still has some work to be done - I need to add more layers of color and fix up certain spots.

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/6112/59vette024br.jpg

Also, here's a concept rendering I did a few weeks ago. It's done in airbrush mixed with prismacolor. (first time trying a 3/4 view with airbrush)

Alex, that looks amazing. :grinyes:

So the trick is to layer the color pencils (lightly at first) and not just go right out for a dark deep tone?

Hey man check your perspective on both tires (tread touching the ground). They do not match/flow with the perspective of the body of the car esp. the front bumper and front tire. Just trying to help.

Take care

Thanks for the comments.

Freedom77: Prismacolors are high grade colored pencils made by sanford. you can get a cheap set of 60 at Wal-Mart for $20-25.

69Charger: Here are some sites with great drawing ref pics:
www.seriouswheels.com
www.dieselstation.com
automobile.2405.com
www.imagestation.com (you have to sign up but it's worth it)
www.highresautoimages.com
www.exoticcarsite.com

Al: Depending on the color, I sometimes have over a dozen layers of color in an area using light pressure... in this case it's blue, then grey, then blue, then grey again... until I get the right color. oh, and thanks for pointing out the tire perspective. I never would have noticed.

We used to refer to the method Alex is using as "Burnishing". Prismacolors have a oil type base not a wax base like many other brands of colored pencils so they blend like paint. If you color yellow over blue you'll get green with very little pressure. If you go over it so it becomes thick you'll get a deep rich blended color.

Back in the day we would transfer our image to a colored Canson paper and then fill the large areas of color with marker...the actual marker color would soak into the paper and it would be kinda dark and weird lookin but when you went over areas with your prismacolors the color would leap off the page!

There's an old marker rendering technique book that shows the method...very cool.

Awesome stuff Alex...you're a freak.

Thanks Lemorris. I'm spraying my drawings with Blair's low odor fixative right now but I'll see if I can find some krylon crystal clear next time i go to the art store. Oh, and any chance you have the name of that marker technique book?

Freedom: If you can't find a set at the store, I think you can order them online for a little bit higher price.

Thanks Challe and 69charger for your words.

Here's an update, I finished more of the hood area.

Thanks again. The fixative is sprayed on the finished drawing to preserve it a bit and to prevent smearing (especially with graphite)

Here's another update.

Thanks again for looking and commenting everybody.

97 sho: They should be in the school supplies section. If not, try the arts/crafts section, if there is one. They come in a set of 60

69Charger: The 2nd pic looks shinier because I saved the pic at a bit higher quality, so it's a bit sharper. Is that what you mean?

Here's an update. The front wheel is finished!

Great wheel Alex!

Love the greys in the white wall...nice touch.

Oh on that Krylon Crystal Clear:

It's a finish fix...not workable...use a workable fix as you go along then Krylon in the end.

Have you found a change in the prismacolor quality since Sanford took over from Berol? Are you in the US?

I noticed I get extra build up...just an observation.

Thanks everybody for commenting.

Lemorris: I actually started using prismacolors recently, so I don't know what the Berol prismacolors are like.

AMV: thanks man. This is on Rising Stonehenge paper. It's texture is fairly grainy/rough which allows for alot of color layering and burnishing to give really smooth results.

97 sho: if you can't find them, I think Staples also carries the set.

69charger: no prob. Feel free to ask me questions.

Here is update 5, I think. Tell me what you think.

Thanks for looking

Alex

Alex,
Looks great! My kind of work. I got started with Prismacolors and Stonehenge paper and it does everything I need so I've never looked at anything else. That's not to say that there isn't something better it's just that I'm very happy with that combination. Keep up the good work.

Thanks again everybody.

Lemorris: I just looked at my scholar set of prismacolors and realized that they're made by Berol. The lead on the sanfords seem to have a little bit of a softer lead, which has its advantages and downsides too: they blend easier but they run out quicker, which means you have to sharpen them more often.

gbritnell: Yeah, prismas work really well with stonehenge.

Well, it's finished! And i'm posting the ref as well. The ref is a lighter shade of blue, but I drew the color darker since I'm doing this as a gift for somebody who used to have this car in a darker shade of bllue. (did that make sense?) :screwy:
