Oh man.......my wife is a Potter fan.....and she's 38 years old, with a university degree, and should know better.
She reserved 2 copies at the local library about a year ago, and just picked them up today. She can't read both at once, so may be I'll go really gay and read the other copy.

harry potter is cool for the right minds. Some people don't even have enough brain to read one chapter. Reading books is like watching movies to some people.

07-16-2005, 02:42 PM
Yea the books don't interest me but reading is cool. What's even funnier is that ton's of stores were selling the book brand new for like 40-50% of off the original price (they claim it's for the love of reading so why charge full price) More like "hey lets make this cult-following super cheap to get people in the stores and spend more money." Smart but absolutley disgusting at the same time. Peace-

Holy crap, it's called having an attention span longer than 5 seconds. I am such a Harry Potter nerd, and I will totally admit it. The movies suck compared to the books.

I am preparing to get dissed horribly bad, but I had to say it.

I agree with you on all points you made there...'cept I'm not a "Harry Potter nerd".

I had to read the first 4 for a class in high school. Seeings how the story isn't at all finished after the 4th book I have to read the rest...I just gotta know what happens.

Harry Potter is NOT INTELLIGENT READING!

If you are and adult and you think it is then I suggest you see a good psychologist about your learning disablity.

Nicole8188
07-18-2005, 02:05 AM
I don't think it's "intelligent" reading. I think it's entertaining reading. And I'm a youngin, so I can still pass it off. Once I hit like 19, I'll stop admitting to it.

everyone should enjoy a good book from time to time. and they are good books.

and while i realize that reading isnt everyones cup of tea, i still dont get why people have to hate on the harry potter series so much. i guess when something this popular, people have to find something to hate about it...

at least kids are reading, thats all that matters to me. less time for them to sit in front of the TV.

Its not my cup of tea, but I applaud the kids (and adults) who'll spend their time reading instead of watching the tube.

I have to admit I am 22 years old and absolutely love the Harry Potter series and I am not ashamed to admit it!!! Sorry Moppie if it isn't "intelligent reading" since I'm sure you're sitting around reading books about history, science, mathimatical equations and other intelligent forms of literature but it gets the imagination going and its a fun read. I appreciate comments such as YogsVR4 and others who admit its not their thing but also don't put it down. So Moppie maybe you shouldn't knock other peoples hobbies and tell people they should go see "a psychologist about your learning disablity" if we enjoy it and find it somewhat intelligent b/c it is better then sitting infront of other mindless forms of entertainment all day or should all people who enjoy video games, tv, computers and such go see your psychologist too??

Not a Harry Potter fan, but I do like reading, if it interests me, like the 3 Halo books, man those were freaking AWESOME and I had to do it for highschool so it helped me out.

Back onto Harry Potter though, this lady who sat next to me on the plane was reading the new one and she looked like older 20s early 30s.

Harry Potter aint my thing but I dont go around saying stuff about it.

I'm sorry but let me crawl out from under this rock and ask....There are 3 Halo books? Is this what the game was based on or vice versa? I would read that in a second...

So....how do you "aquire" the mercha....I mean...books?

Books are just like CD's, DVD's and video games - they have a certian distributor that is hired to send them to stores that are liscenced to sell them.

But seriously, they day J.K. Rowling gets writers block - well that's one less annoying thing i have to deal with - oh fuck it, somebody put a hit out on that bitch! :lol2:

J.K. Rowling does nothing special, none of the Harry Potter books contain anything orginal or particular imaginative.
They are all based around themes and ideas that have been present in Fantasy and Folk Lore for hundreds and even thousands of years.
She simple takes these themes and ideas reduces them to their most simple forms and turns them into a story written in a very simple easy to follow style.
Then she got lucky with a very good publicist who was able to spare a few million $$ for some fancy marketing.

Harry Potter is the Mills and Boon of Chilrens litrature.
Its the Famous Five of the new millenium.

First of all Moppie Harry Potter is not just a book for woman or girls. There are plenty of boys and men who read it. So to compare it to the romance novels of Mill & Boon or the Famous Five women is just ignorance and stupidity on your part, just as you ripping apart a book simply b/c you don't like it. As for them simply being themes that have been around for thousands of years that may be true but then so is almost every other book, movie, tv show, video game etc. How many tv shows are there about cops, lawyers, love struck teenagers or video games about war, cars etc. So if you want to say that Harry Potter is based on themes that have been present for thousands of years or is unimaginative you should really not be so closed minded and realize that so is almost everything out there that you are into I'm sure. As for J.K. Rowling's publisher just getting "lucky" you need to defintiely get your facts straight....In 24 hours the book sold more than the top two grossing movies of the weekend. It has topped all previous selling records of any book and the second top seller was the release of the 5th book. In 24 hours 6.9 million copies were sold. That is more than 250,000 an hour!!!! A lot more then luck is needed to sell so many books and top so many records and even beat out the movies top 2 grossing films of the weekend!! So before you go around bashing things you obvoiusly don't know anything about you really need to open your mind and do a little research and get your facts straight so you can talk intelligently on a subject rather just rambling your biased and ignorant opinions.

First of all Moppie Harry Potter is not just a book for woman or girls.

I never said it was.

There are plenty of boys and men who read it. So to compare it to the romance novels of Mill & Boon or the Famous Five women is just ignorance and stupidity on your partjust as you ripping apart a book simply b/c you don't like it.

The Famous five was a popular series of Childrens books written by Enid Blyton in the 40s http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/eblyton.htm
The books were popular with both boys and girls, and with 21 books in the series, and over 400 differnt titles to her name, Blyton makes J.K. Rowling look like a one hit wonder.

As for them simply being themes that have been around for thousands of years that may be true but then so is almost every other book, movie, tv show, video game etc. How many tv shows are there about cops, lawyers, love struck teenagers or video games about war, cars etc.

There are lots, but it holds no relevance to this debate.

So if you want to say that Harry Potter is based on themes that have been present for thousands of years or is unimaginative you should really not be so closed minded and realize that so is almost everything out there that you are into I'm sure.

Your making two points here, one is true, and totaly irrlevent, and the others is a completely false and unjustified accusation. Both are mixed up in a sentance thats makes absolutly no sense.

The lack of imaginative content in current popular media has absolutly no bearing on my beliefs about the nature of the Harry Potter books.
It in no way implies that I am closed minded, and your belief that it does, and attempt to form it into a cohesive and logical argument points towards your apprent ignorance and lack of educuation.

I said she was lucky to find the publicist that she did, not lucky to have the sales she has had.
She has had high sales because, as I mentioned, she wrote several books useing well tried and tested themes presented in an easy to understand fashion that filled a gapping hole in the market place.
She was then lucky enough to find a publicist who saw this and was able to produce a marketing compaign that convinced children and thier parents that Harry Potter was the single best piece of childrens litrature ever prodcued, regardless of any truth about the actual quality of the work.
As a work of litrature Harry Potter is nothing special, as an exercise in Targeted Marketing its a huge success.

So before you go around bashing things you obvoiusly don't know anything about you really need to open your mind and do a little research and get your facts straight so you can talk intelligently on a subject rather just rambling your biased and ignorant opinions.

And before you go around calling people you don't know ignorant, biased and closed minded I suggest you take a close look at yourself first, because you don't sound particulary educated or intelligent.
And there is nothing worse than an uneducated ignorant arrogant moron.

IKG
07-20-2005, 09:30 AM
Moppie if you are the model of an educated, open minded, humble adult in saying in one of your previous posts that any adult who feels that Harry Potter is intelligent reading (when by the way no one before you had ever even stated that) should see a psychologist, that is truly disheartening. I do not have time for someone who is obviously not willing to open their mind to other forms of literature and feel that their point is the only correct point out there, seeing that this uneducated woman has just received her MBA and is studying for the Bar Exam. However, I will respond to your last post and end the debate there. I salute Rowlings reinvention of the classic themes in a form that is enjoyed by all and has opened many to reading. You say you are not closed-minded but all you do is sit there and bash a book you have not even read and those who enjoy it. That is ignorance at its finest. So I will take the high road here and end this debate because it is illogical to continue debating with someone who is making accusations about a book they have not even taken the time to try and read.

** For your knowledge the famous five were also five visionary women from Alberta who have become known simply as the “Famous 5” and therefore it was not a far reach to assume you only meant girls/woman as also you compared Harry Potter to the romance novels of Mills & Boon. **

seeing that this uneducated woman has just received her MBA and is studying for the Bar Exam.

Unless the American Legal system works differntly to the rest of the world you require at least an undergraduate degree in Law before you sit the Bar Exam, not exactly what I would call uneducated.
Having an MBA just puts you in an ever smaller elite group of educated people.

All indications you are someone who should know that out side of North America no one really cares about 5 famous women from Canada. On a global scale, which this forum encompasses, and given the topic under discussion (litrature) the works of Enid Blyton are clearly the obvious refernce.

And this debate is over when both of us stop commenting.

Uhhh you may want to go over your stuff Moppie, IKG was obviously being sarcastic when she said she was uneducated b/c you had called her that in your previous post and obviously she's far from uneducated. hahaha Yo man she got you on that one!!!! Wow you guys are intense

/sigh

enough of the bickering!

They are entertaining books. I feel that their structure is quite well laid out, it's in a style that is easy to follow as well as continually interesting.

If you don't like them... Good for you. If you do like them... Good for you. It's literature, everyone has different taste.

...finished the 6th book in under 6 hours.
