check engine light (erg problems)

I hope someone can help my check engine light came on and I had the diag test done and code 71 came up it states could be erg valve, or sensors has anyone had this problem and can help my mechanic said he could check it but I would like to save some $$. When going about 45-50 it stutters. Thanks

Code 71 means EGR gas temp. below pre-determined level during EGR operation.

Open circuit EGR gas temp. sensor signal (THG)

1. Clean the EGR valve. <= your best bet

2. Check the EGR hoses for connection and cracks, deterioration.

3. Check the EGR gas temperature sensor circuit for bad connections, shorts, broken wires.

4. Check EGR gas temperature sensor operation.

5. Check operation of VSV for EGR circuit, including VSV for EGR valve.

6. ECU is last.
