Valve Lash Adjustment on 1.3L engine

I have a 2000 Chevy Metro and see that part of routine service is to adjust the valve lash. Is this really necessary and do they go out of specification frequently. Any owners here who do this procedure as part of routine service?

I would have thought that the hydraulic lash adjusters don't need periodic adjusting. Maybe I'm wrong?

Hot, I don't have a 2000 metro but are you sure the manual says there are adjustable valve clearances on the 1.3 ltr.? If adjustible, it is very important that they be manually adjusted periodically according to the manual. As the engine ages the valves will sink slightlly into there seats aor wear som decreasing the valve lash distance. If the valves are not adjusted you will start buring valves, needing a valve/head reconditioning. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I've never done this before but the manual does specify this as part of regular service (cannot remember the no of miles). It looks like the rocker arms have an adjusting locknut. I do have the factory service manual but for my bad luck I think due to a typo the procedure is incomplete. I'm guessing that you need to move the camshaft until the rocker arms are clear of the lobes and then adjust the locknut until the clearance between the camshaft and the rocker arms match the specification. Is this what I should be doing?

I do have the engine specs also in the manual but cannot figure out what the correct entry in the spec table I should be looking for. Also should this be done with the engine hot or cold.

yes, you got it. Take off the cam cover and when the lobes for each cyl are pointing to opposite sides that is tdc for that cyl. The three cyl does not run a rocker at least in the models I have seen. If it has rocker, it is the gap between the end of the rocker and what it pushes down on. Your book should say this and if done hot or cold. It should have the clearances for the intake and exhaust valves.
