Heater Fan Switch Problem

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima with a heater switch that only runs in high speed mode (#4 on the dial). There is no difference whether I have it on heater mode or A/C mode in terms of speed variations. Is this a defective swich or is there some sensor that may be creating this condition? Is there place I can continuity check the switch without having to remove parts of the dash assembly before I get into major repairs?

Your fan switch is fine.

You need a new resistor block.

The resistor block controls the fan speed. It's located on the HVAC ducts (quack - quack) under and behind the glove box. It sits on the air duct after the fan motor. There is a connector with several wires on it. Unplug it, remove the resistor block from the duct and replace it.

Go to your Nissan dealer to obtain the resistor block first so you know what to look for once you get under there.

Your fan speeds 1,2, & 3 will work once you replace the resistor block.

Thanks so much for the thorough and complete answer to my question. I am very pleased with the response and assume that it won't be too difficult to get a resistor block to replace it. Will just removing the glove box be enough room to get to the duct (quack)? I won't have to remove any of the dash to get to it will I?
