Bike Mod Furies

OMG, i'm getting mad. I teach my girlfriend to ride using my 250R and decided to give it a new look, besides the Kawa Green. So i bought some new handgrips (carbon fiber w/ green) and was soo happy when they finally arrived. So i troupe out to the bike "shop" area. And realized that though this bike isn't that old, i'm finding that the screws IN the handlebar caps have got a grip on my bike like the hulk. I can't get these screws out, or even to move for that matter, you guys have any tips? I'd like to get my new grips off my desk and onto my bike ^^. Thanks gurus.

spray WD-40 on them and let them sit for a couple hours then try again if not loose yet repeat process dont be shy with it either TONS of WD-40

Get a penatrant[liquid wrench]. WD stands for "Water Displacement"[no bull], penetrates O.K. Spray,tap lightly with Hammer,repeat,wait, then muscle it.

Ack, i used a ton of Bolt Buster on one end, tapped with screwdriver and wrench, but to no avail, i can't break em'.. :headshake . These screws are crazy stuck and they're startin' to piss me off. Help me!!!!! :frown:

what kind is it... is it philips screw or is it a allen(hex) key?...

if its a screw .. they make these hammer screwdrivers.. you hit the end with a hammer and it twists so that you can get off hard screws without stripping them (hopefully) if you can find something like that at maybe sears or an tool store.. that may help you.. my dad has one.. its AWESOME.. saved my ass many times with shit like that.. now i have to drive 80 miles to get it if i need it

Dude, those tools are LIFESAVERS!!! They have saved my butt a million times over!

Are the screws rusted at all? If WD-40 didn't do the trick, try PB Blaster... it's a rust penetrant. If the reason they are stuck is rust, that should help.

If the handlebar caps are the ones i've seen on other Ninjas they are made of steel [ strong and thick ]. use vise grips or BIG set of pliers to turn the cap as if you are unscrewing it. Use a rag to protect the cap's finish. It is rust but it's just a matter of leverage. Impact screwdriver is good but carefull that you don't strip the tip.

the actual cap isn't whats being unscrewed, the tips have a screw IN them, so you unscrew the screw, and slip off the caps, i don't think turning caps would help. :confused:

Just to loosen the seized screw, then it will be much easier

Although if that doesnt work what you COULD do is go find some termites yes termites...train them to eat metal instead of wood through years of training and breeding...after you have found the perfect metal eating termite learn to speak with him or her..once youve got your communication skills down..tell him to crawl in there and eat just enough of the head off the screw to pull the cap off..once its off use vise grips on the nub of the screw and PRESTO! be sure this particular termite likes you though or it might crawl into your bike ane eat something it shouldnt be eating like a hole in the block between the cylinders...

ok i'll give you all a trade tip for screws that won't budge.

get hold of a good cordless drill. Dewalt 18V works very well.

set the clutch to "hammer" out the screw. i.e set the clutch so it slips and hammers but doesn't actually rotate. after a few seconds it will loosen the screw. carefull not to set it too high or it will tear the screw out

this is a lot easier than an impact driver

or go with the high trained termites.

Okay, impact drivers are like 120+, what is the name of those hammer screwdrivers??? I need the company name and name of the tool (ask your dad ^ ^). Please, im dying for new grips, my old ones are getting kinda sticky and nappy lookin.

the name of the easy option tool is an impact driver. its a chunky screw driver with interchangable heads that you hit the back of with a hammer and it ratchets the head. kinda hard to use especially on the end of handlebars. they will move and not give you a very solid backing to hit against.

borrow a drill. you must have a mate who has one or a mates dad.
this way you can push on the drill and push back with the bar in a controlled way, rather than hold a driver, hold a hammer, stop the bike from moving and hit it hard enough

i'm going home this weekend, i'll borrow my stepdads powerdrill and try and wiggle it loose, if all else fails, i could use a drill bit and drill the head of the screw out ::((. I'll update you guys my "progress".

My friends grandpa had a high torque type power drill. We went over there at like 11pm and i parked my bike up on the porch (>.<). But 30 seconds later i had both endcaps off. The new grips are a lil short, theydon't push on all the way cuz theres these little tabs, but i don't wanna break em off and have the handlebar stickin out. SO i just sslid em on and put the endcaps back on. Anybody know what i could use to put around the handlebar to cover that small space? Likke a round piece of rubber or foam that would fit or cut to fit the handlebar?? Thanks gurus.
