odometer problem?

My odometer has suddenly gone out. then came back on and the 1000 kms or so i drove were never recorded. what happend?

Ya know, if it a very early ride, the mechanical gear or cable may have gone out for a bit. If it later electronic, same thing, only electrical glitch.
