I am wondering what kind of gas milage you guys get. I am running the 31's on 4.11 and getting less than 15.

I get 16.22 MPG on completely stock 1993 YJ 5 speed 4L Inline 6. I had to calculate things because I get 300 miles on a 70 liter tank of gas. So i got metric and english numbers combined. I drive this thing really hard, on road and offroad. Its gotten stuck in miud up to the top of the wheel wells. I just installed a new o2 sensor that doubled my gas mileage from before with no o2 sensor.

I get around 17 with my stock 97 Sahara I6 4.0L with 30's.

I get about 250 miles out of a tank of gas and I'm running 33's on 3.73 gears, so I figure my speedo is about 17% off. Basically I get about 292.75 miles on a tank of gas and it usually takes 18 gallons to fill which is about 16.25 miles per gallon.

04 4cyl, 215/75R15's: 22.5 mpg highway, about 20 in town.
02 6cyl, 225/75R15's, 23 mpg hwy, about 18 in town.
97 4 cyl(2.5L) 235/75R15's, and 235/70R15's, got 17 everywhere.

I get about 18 with my 1996 Cherokee 4.0 high output everything stock.

Why do 4 cylinder Jeeps get such bad mileage if they only have 2.5L?

Maybe because the 2.5 doesn't have much power, so you have to feed it the gas to get anything out of it. Add that to the fact that Wranglers aren't the most aerodynamic of vehicles and you've got your answer.
I may have had a bad O2 sensor also.

My sister's 97 Wrangler has a 2.5 and it's gas mileage is crap. I was driving it on the highway doing about 70 mph and when I would start going up a hill it would lose speed even with me on the gas. I mean this thing is great off road but it is definetly not built for the highway whatsoever.

Honestly, how much do you expect out of a 2.5 trying to push a barn door down the road @ 70?

I used to cruise at 75-80 regularly with mine. Until I hit the mountains, that is.

You're right I did expect too much. I'm too used to driving a 96' Cherokee 4.0 High Output that wouldn't slow down for anything or anyone.

We have a 2004 Rubicon w/ the 4l. It's a great engine. Anyway, it gets about 15 average.

I get about 23 on the highway and 15 in town. I have a:
2.5L
30 in Dayton Timberline A/Ts
4.10 gears
The fastest I drive is about 60 though. Anything above that and the MPGs drop fast!

I think about swapping in a mazda engine all the time. They get great milage. 6 series gets 800km per tank.

98 TJ Sport 4.0L gets about 17-18 HWY (depending on wind) and 14-15 CITY (depending on lights).

So true, I usually lose about 5-6 MPG when going 70-75 compared to going around 60 MPH

Seems like jeep should have made an overdrive gear (significantly higher) for the manuals.
Mines69Olds

Jeeps were never made to go fast. They were made to get you anywhere you wanted to go.
Millermagic

I wasn't saying fast. But if they were to put in a high gear where the engine was turning like 1000 revs at 55mph, it'd get good mileage. And the 4.0 would have no problem down there.
Mines69Olds

Well if they had an overdrive gear you know someone would go faster and jeeps can be really unstable at high speeds. So I think they did that for safety reasons.

I can see a problem with an overdrive gear. That too could be overcome but it would add alot of complexity. I've heard bad things about acetone.

5 speed manual transmissions and 4 speed auto's all have overdrive in top gear (very few if any of these are direct drive in top gear). It is meant for cruising at highway speeds with reduced engine RPM for mileage reasons.
As for acetone -- there's been a lot of discussion on a lot of forums. This one for example has atleast 3 threads in the fuel and additive section going back about 30 days.

I think there is one on the first page and maybe the 3rd and 4th pages. Take a look. Many of these guys are the "scientist" type and even they don't have all the answers.

I heard that the Acetone stuff eats the fuel lines and eats up seals and stuff.

My 2000 4.0 lit manual does 13 miles per gallon. In city+ mountain driving that is. Here in Lebanon highways are not very common...

I hear ya about going over 60 reduces the MPG. I travel about 85 in Houston and the tach reads the same as when I get off the line. It only goes above that if I have to get on it hard.

2006 Wrangler 2.4 with 31" tires 6 speed manual ... I get 18mpg. Some days I have the power I need but on windy days I almost have to do the Freddy Flintstone and completely forget about using 6th gear unless you are going downhill or are on flat roads.
But thats ok cuz when I decided to get a Jeep I told myself that if I was looking for speed I might as well keep my 2002 Grand Am. Im old enough to start having fun and still young enough to enjoy it.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
06 2.4 SE. I currently get 24mpg in the city, have not done enough hwy to get an estimate. I'm pretty happy with the gas milage, but it is completly stock and I do piss of everyone behind me :)
