does anyone have experience toublrshooting the cruise control on the 78 olds?

Been a while, but what's the problem? Common failure item on those is the wiring that snakes down the column from the 'smart stick' (aka turn signal lever). check for frayed wires, not a hard job to change, but will take a little while. Of course, fuses, linkage adjustments, vacuum connections could all cause problems as well.
