Brakes failed

This morning as I was backing out of my driveway my brakes failed. The pedal went to the floor and I was not able to pump them up. I was going slow so the emergency brake worked to stop. After stopping I put the van back into drive and the brakes seemed to work. My question is is this a bad master cylender?

The master cylinder could be bad, as well as a bad wheel cylinder. It is also possible that the fluid level was too low (as the pads wear the wheel cylinders stay closer to the disk, which requires more brake fluid in their cylinders, which lowers the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder). First check the fluid level of the master cylinder. If it is low (and this caused the failure you mentioned) you will need to bleed the system. Also check for leaks around the master cylinder just in case. Then check the wheel cylinders by pulling off the wheels (one at a time, of course) and looking for signs of leakage. I seem to recall that someone in this forum had a bad wheel cylinder on their Venture that caused some other related damage). The only other thing that I can think of would be a problem with the ABS system, but I would check that only if everything else checked out good. I would also check to see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer related to the braking system. Good luck!

This hapened to me. A hole was worn in the metel brake line on the rear end where it makes a sharp bend. Dealer fixed it ok. Cost me $200.00 plus change (I didn't have tools at hand) was clearly a manufacturing defect - but the GM dearler didn't care! Think on that one! It was out of warantee.

What a surprise!! The dealer didn't cover it!! If the GM dealerships were smart ,they would warranty their vans for life and get rich from warranty, fixing them!!
