I have a 95 Lumina 3.1 and every now and then i lose over drive. It dont matter if i am going up a hill or on flat pavment. Now here is the strange part when i pull over and shut the car off and then start it again it will be there again. What do you guys think is wrong with this. Do i need a new tranny? Thanks for looking

yeah, tranny is defenatly shot. sorry dude :(

he he he, just kidding. Um, no if you can pull over, and shut it off and start it up, that tells me its an electrical issue. I'd say maybe the TCC. I dont really know much about these, but you can read on other posts all about them. Sounds a lot like your problem, and its just a sensor in your tranny.

Yeah, I think blake is correct. Your tranny is shot.

J/K! Like he says, you may have a sticking upshift solenoid or a bad sensor. Make sure the shifter indexing isn't the problem too. You try moving it slightly when it happens, see if it comes back?

Just wondering, cuz if you stop and restart, you'd be putting it in park and then back to D4, possibly re-engaging that selection again.

Try some of that TransX if its the TCC to try and free the darn thing.

Thanks guys so far i have changed the fluid and filter and i noticed that there was a fair amout of metal shavings on the magnet. so im not too sure on how much longer this thing will last. after i replaced the fluid and filter it slipped really bad in first gear so i put some seafoam trans tune and it seems to have taken care of the problem and it hasnt lost overdrive. NOT YET ANYWAYS.

ok so after not having any problems for 800 or so miles the spedometer is acting funny around 70 to 75 miles per hour and overdriver periodically goes out again. today after it was working perfectly on the freeway i stopped at the gastation and when i left i noticed that the car souded a bit loud so i checked and sure enough overdrive was gone again.

so my question is do you think its the speed sensor?

I fixed it, the problem was the speed sensor pig tail was frayed and grouding it self out so i repaired it with a new one and it has never worked better.
