Can anyone tell me how to do this? I do not have a manual for my car (a cutlass, 97.. supreme SL with 3.1 LV6).
If I remove the pos. battery cable, will that clear the codes from the PCM?
Do codes have to be cleared before the "service engine soon" light will go off?
Thanks,
brian

Ok Brain, your '97 has OBDII diagnostics and they can only reset codes with a scan tool. Some Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will reset themselves after a certain number of normal start cycles.
Some chain type auto parts stores will give a free diagnostic check so you can see whats wrong.
Some folks here can help discuss the problem after you get the free check.

Here are the codes I have:
This evening, I went to Autozone and hooked up the car to their computer. The codes returned were
P0121 - Throttle position sensor (I replaced this after seeing this code)
and
P1133 - H02S Insufficient Switching Sensor 1 / Bank 1 fuel control shifted lean (FAOSC).
I have replaced the TPS. Have not rescanned since. I have no idea what the P1133 is talking about. The oxygen sensor (pre cat) has been replaced also.

--For those who care... I went to Autozone last night and they let me clear the codes out of the PCM using their tool (they won't do it, but they will let you). After this, the service engine soon light went out and has stayed out thusfar.
Thanks for all the help!

Glad it's fixed. That was odd. Sometimes it says something is wrong w hen there really isn't.. or it is so insignificant. I'll have to remember that if something like that happens to me!

The #2 heated O2 sensor on my '97 Bravada kicks out a code every year or so, I reset it with my scanner (I ain't givin'em free advertize) and wait till next year.
