Mid-Size SUV

I'm looking into buying a mid-size SUV. I had looked into the Saturn Vue. I've had good luck with the Saturn SL-1's, but I read in Consumer Reports or Edmunds that the Vue has POOR reliability. What are your experiences with Vues?

What other mid-size SUVs would you suggest and how much can I get the most basic new one for(probably manual 4 cyl.)? Here are my priorities:

1. $15,000-$20,000
2. foot space for passengers
3. Gas mileage
4. Safety
