This is a quick fun one from tonight...
While coming home from the hooka bar tonight with my two buddies we were being tailgated very closely by a pair of very bright and familiar headlights. After about 15 seconds of tailgating me he caught a break in traffic and passed me on my left side going WOT. It just so happend to be a black 3.25 E36 with a very nice, deep sounding exhaust. After waiting for traffic to clear up a bit so I could safely get through the couple cars around me, we pulled up next to him. I was in 3rd doing about 45mph or so when we pulled up next to him. After a couple quick revs he caught my drift and he nailed it, as did I. I could hear his throaty exhaust wailing away, but we quickly put about 4-5 lengths on him before shutting down. At first I asked my buddies "Did he even go?"
My friend in the passenger seat that was right next to the car replied with "He sure as hell did!" and the one in the back said something to the nature of "I hope that wasn't an M3, cause that thing was slow!" :lol2:
But I still wasn't sure if he went or not cause we pulled so hard. Sure enough he came back on us quickly to my passenger side after we slowed down, I figured he wanted another go so I got ready to mash the gas. Instead my buddy says to me "He just gave you the thumbs up dude." I was like "Well then, he did go...damn." I guess he had had enough. :grinyes:
I didnt get the chance to ask him if anything was modded besides his exhaust and the lowering job it had...ah well. Fun stuff anyway.
Damn I love the sound of the BMW I6 with a good exhaust.

Yuppers. I think the wing attracts a lot of attention...wanted and unwanted. I've been averaging about a race or more a day for the last 5 days now. It's sorta getting out of hand. I've always had pretty good cop karma, but that could end any time now. So I'm always on the lookout. As were my buddies. 6 eyes are better than two :)
It's like I have to defend my wing's honor or something like that with the guys on the streets. With big wing, comes big responsibility...

Heh, it was dark, and the car was dark. Kinda hard to tell at first glance. Plus the buddy that wasnt sure what it was, was in the back seat. All he could see from his point of view was the backs of our heads, and wing.
At any rate, stock for stock teh E36 M3 would get pulled on as well. Not with 3 dudes in my car Vs. one in the M3 though. I'm talkin bout a fair fight here. Heh.

I said E36 M3. As you know there is a big difference between the almost gutless E36 M3 and the E46 M3.

Stock E36 M3 is about a low 14 second car and the SS is mid 14.
So find one and race one, should be fun to watch.

It's got near the same BHP, unless BMW's number are underrated. The Cobalt has around a 250 pound wieght advantage as well as better gearing. The Cobalt's major flaw is that it can't launch...whatsoever. So people see mid 14 sec-low 15 1/4 passes and completely judge the rest of the car's performance off of that.
I really want to find a stock E36 M3 to run around here. It would be close, but I think I could nudge it out. Problem is, most BMW owners around here are satisfied with puting around town doing 10 under the speed limit, (due to age of most BMW owners in Az) so it'll be hard to find one to run. I could however run my buddies RMS M3...but we all know how that would turn out.

I'm not saying that an E36 would destroy you, it would be pretty much a drivers race, but most of the time I'd put my money on the E36. They trap around the same so it would be closer from a roll.

I think your giving your car way to much credit with this one, the E36 ///M3s could run legit low 14s (14.2s, 14.3s), and I've heard of 13.9xs. Hell, the other night I watched a stock one run a stock Mustang GT, and he beat the GT by about two lengths. I also know the drivers of both, and I know they both knew what they were doing.

the E36 would really be a drivers race with the SS i guess. however bulldog, you stated that you have your advantage in gearing. that is incorrect esp from a roll. the E36 has very very tall and long gears. it also has a very high top speed. its a highway bruiser rather then a stop light dragster.
if you have enough power, having taller gears helps out becasue it doesn't slow down the car too much yet you don't have to shift and you can have a much higher top speed. that is why VR4's, 300ZX TT's, Supra's ETC have such long gears and have such crazy top end.

The shifts on this thing are fine with the close ratio tranny. I've also got powershifting this thing down to a fine art, it sounds great when power shifted and really helps keep max boost/rpm up.
The reason why I think it would be able to run down an M on the highway is because the SS is very top endish. Once you get it up to 5000+ rpm it flies. I gotta get some in-car video sometime. It's great fun. This thing has no problem getting to 125 in 4th gear with some rpm left. I did it just lastnight :)
Also, lower gearing means excelleration...say I did a 2nd gear roll at 20 mph with an M3. My lower gear would help get my rpm up into my powerband much faster. Which hopefully would give me a jump. This is all speculation of course, and has yet to be proven. But I'm optimistic.

I don't care if it's a 3.0 or 3.2, if it makes almost the same power, which was ONLY the case in 95.

I think I'm gonna take a drive around Scottsdale tonight and have my buddy bring his dig cam. If there's anything fun to play with, it's in that area of town. Maybe I might just catch an M...who knows.
I'm thinking it may be hard to find a stock E36 M that will run me though. The problem is, anyone who will be driving one in this area will most likely be older, and probably not willing to run. If I do manage to find a younger guy that's got one and wants to run, I think it'll most likely be modified, cause it's no beast in stock form. Although it's a very nice car that I would love have, I think it's a little lackluster for a 40+ k car. This is just my theory anyhow, but who knows, maybe I'll get lucky.

When the E36 M was new it was a little over 40k. Obviously it can be had for much less now. But as it stands bone stock, for costing 40k plus new, it kinda sucks a little. However, the E46 M changed all of that, there's no suckage there.

I believe you're referring to the European M3, and not the U.S. based M3. I read in a magazine where they mounted a Dinan Supercharger to a E36 M3, and only ran 150 mph, hitting the rev limiter in 5th gear. They are also governed at 138 I believe.
Bulldog, an E36 M3 will beat your car soundly. BMW doesn't go by the same standards as the U.S. when measuring horsepower. For that reason the 240 horsepower they rate their cars at is underrated in my opinion. They've been tested to a 14.0 sec. 1/4 mile at 99 mph. The lightweight version will run high 13's. 3-4 tenths of a sec. is a big advantage in the 1/4 mile. You gotta figure that 4 tenths is a good 2 car lengths at the least.

I'm talking about a 2nd gear roll from around 20 mph or so. Mine will also do well over 138 in stock form. It's got no top speed gov. I had it to 135 with my buddy in the car in 4th gear lastnight...with about 600 rpm to go before 5th gear change was needed (it got there in a big hurry too, my buddy was thoroughly impressed). This car is very topendish. In my Opinion the SS is more of a highway monster than the E36 M3. :2cents:
All I need is someone with a stock M to prove or disprove my point. Good luck on that tho, I couldnt even get a guy with an E46 M3 to run me lastnight. Thats an awesome car that old guy will never fully enjoy...

If you go back in this thread you'll notice I've already said I can't take one in the 1/4 mile ;)
:2cents:
