DO NOT GO TO AUTOZONE OR ADVANCED AUTO PARTS!!!!!! :grinno:
Instead, try the local junk yards or online junk yards. Try NAPA too. Remove and replace with the help of childrens...I mean chiltons manual or hayes manual.
You could also look into shelling out cash to a mechanic for the labor only if you just buy the parts.

you can do it yourself for about 100 bucks.... Go to the junk yard, get another compressor (no more than $60) Then you can go to Advance or Auto Zone and get 4 cans of refridgerant (1 of them with stop leak in it... too much stop leak thought is know to lead to problems with your A/C system. Thats why I recommend only 1 can)

thanks pete and ncin. now ive been hearing a funky noise from my engine, plus a burning smell. this morning, the power steering went out. well it looks like my power steering pulley is not turning, its too rusty or something. this was causing the funky noise and was burning away the belt on the rubber causing the smell. and this morning the belt mustve broken off cuz then i lost steering. ive replaced the belt as a temp fix, but this means ive now got to replace the pulley and probably the power steering pump too. again ive no idea how to do this on a caprice. where can i get a hold of a service manual for cheap?
thanks

Since you said your pulley is stuck, chances are you power steering pump is shot. You probably will need to replace it.

i'm having the same issue (with burning smell and loud screeching noise, and some loud rattling) coming from my 1989 chevy caprice. i believe it to be my ac compressor so i'm in the process of removing it. my question is that when removing the air lines from the back of the compressor i'm getting alot of air bleed out. if there a another/proper way of removing those lines? or should i just let it slowly bleed out on it's own and continue to remove it once it's finished?

1st, this thread is not only over 90 days old from last post, it's also almost 3 years since the last post!
2nd, that's not air - it's freon 12 and if you vent it into the atmosphere, you risk a $25,000 fine from the EPA / Dept of Justice.

being that it's freon bleeding out, is there another/proper procedure for removing that line and removing the compressor?

I would suggest starting a new thread, this one will be closed if a mod comes across it, you'll get better responses too
