96 Chevy Blazer Electrical Problem..

Hello,
I just bought a 1996 Chevy Blazer S10 2DR\2WD and I noticed the interior light wasn't coming on when I opened the door so I imimmediately checked the door jam switch and found the arm on it busted so I went to autozone got another one.

I disconnected the battery and simply unplugged the old one and plugged the new one in reconnected the battery and now the dash lights blinking the hazard lights are on and the engine is cocompletely dead. along with the very annoying alarm like you left the keys in the ignition. I tried disconnecting the new switch and leaving the battery cable off for 2hrs with no luck at all. Now even with nothing plugged in I'm still getting the flashing dash, hazards, alarm and a dead engine...

How can a simple job go so wrong???


Please any help would be great!!

check where that switch connects to the fuse panel.

Sounds like an aftermarket alarm system with a starter kill relay installed is going off, which would definitely happen after reconnecting the battery. If there was a siren, it could have been disconnected or broken. The parking lights flash as if the hazards are on, but in actuality the alarm is turning the parking lights on and off at the switch - this is why the "key ding" is going.

The ease of removal of the alarm depends on a few things. Disconnecting the alarm brain will make the vehicle stop flashing and dinging, but more will have to be done.

The starter kill relay "interrupts" the starter wire near the steering column, so simply unplugging the relay will not work - the starter wire will have to be put back together. It should be pretty obvious which wire this is, as it will be leading to and from the factory wire bundle coming from the steering column. Offhand, I beleive it is something like a 10-gauge green wire but you will want to check it yourself and make sure.

If you have factory power locks, I beleive the '96 has what's called a "5-wire system", so unlike the more conventional "3-wire" system it will also not work when unplugging the alarm brain. The way to tell is to see how the brain is connected. Like the starter kill relay, the 5-wire system interrupts the power lock wires, they will be cut in the middle and connected to the alarm brain or relays (depending on the unit's features). Rejoining the wires will restore the lock. If I am wrong (I don't have documentation here) and the power locks are the 3-wire system, the locks will work fine even after disconnecting the alarm brain.

Hello,
The windows and locks work fine, but after looking under the dash I did notice an alarm so I called the prevouis owner and he said the alarm was totally disconnected ,but the parts were left in the vehicle.. as for the kill switch the motor would still crank and my truck isn't even making a sound.

it was not disconnected my friend had the exact same problem with his it will not crank the engine at all even my aftermarket 1 will not crank the engine cause its an ignition shuttoff from the tumbler past and if the disconnect it the would of taken it out completely and rewire that area cause the second you disconnect it you lose power to locks ignition i believe hazards and all that if there is a model number for the alarm system look it up and see if there is a bypass for it to shut it off mines an avital and the second i disconnect the battery and connect it back up the alarm goes of thats also a safety feature cause alot of ppl think disconnecting battery and reconnecting shuts it off but on some it doesnt and sets off the alarm hope this helps
