Ok, so im about 16 and a half and my dad is finally giving me a car allowance of about 10,000 dollars...i went on kbb and found a nice 01 Eclipse GT for around 9000. Now my dad is saying no to this because of the insurance costs, but im wondering how much they really are. Since im with state farm i get the good grades discount and what not, but im wondering how much do you guys have to pay for insurance so i have an idea if im gonna get a chance at owning this car or not.
thanks.
thanks.

i dont believe this car does much to raising your insurance. contrary to popular belief, most insurance companies DO NOT classify the 3G as a sports car. its classified as a passenger car.
if the car is going to be in your name, and on your own insurance, its going to be high no matter what car you get. i am paying a little over $300 a month on insurance b/c the car is in my name. the speeding tickets and wrecked cars dont help out either.
if you are going to be on your dads insurance policy, the insurance wont be that bad. when i was on my parents insurance, it was only like $120 extra a month.

Well any idea if State Farm would classify the 3G as a passenger car or not? Im pretty sure it will be on my dads insurance policy but he still says it will be expensive. Im not sure why he would put it in my name if i am not going to pay for it. Thanks for the info.

yeah you best bet is to just ask. but dont ask if they classify the car as a sports car....ask them how they classify the car. let them give you the answer.

yeah thats just what i did i pay for my car bill and insurance and i just registered it under my dads name insurance is about $165 which isnt too bad, also i am 17 so i would def recomend you put it under your dads name that way (i am guessing your dad is paying insurance for a little) if he decides to make you start paying your bill wont kill you. get the windows etched with the vin saved me another 10%.

Yeah I have state farm insurance and they don't classify it as a sports car. I have a 01 GT and pay 138 a month for it and that is with tickets and a wreck where totalled a car. Of course the fact that i am 23 years old help out with that to. It also matters what state you are in to because some states are higher than others

is your car the only one on the insurance policy? i have one ticket and two totalled cars, im 23, and i pay $300 a month with progressive. when i first got the car, i checked with state farm and they wanted to charge me like $3000 every 6 months.

Will there are 2 cars on the insurance policy (The eclipse and my Alero) and they are both mine in my name so i am getting a mulitple cars discount and I have a life insurance policy which gives me a muteple policy discount. I have full cover on the Eclipse with 500 deduc and Liablity on the Alero and I only pay 180.25 a month for everything. One other thing that helps out is if you keep the same insurance company for a while. I have had State Farm since I was 16 years old, and they have insured all 7 cars that I've had

ok, since i told my parents that State Farm doesnt consider this car a sports car, they decided to call State Farm and ask "Do you consider _____ a sports car" which means they are going to say yes.
So now i need some way of proving to them that they dont consider it a sports car, or some way to show them that others have State Farm and they are saying it isnt a sports car.
maybe there is a list of cars and what they are considered, i dont know, but ive tried to find proof of it and i just cant, so any help is appreciated

try a different insurance company. i had my corvette through gieco for a year, then when i got the eclipse, i decided to get quotes from others. State Farm was actually, for me, the highest. Allstate had a better deal, so i went with them.
Look around man, you might be suprised. some operators will be dicks though, and tell you, because your a minor, they cannot give you certain information about quotes. you'll probably have to tell them youre 18 or just let your parents do it.

The thing about insurance companies and their prices is that they look at all the statistics for that car (cost of repairing, how often that type of car is totalled in accidents, saftey statistics, car theft rates for that car and on and on) then they look at the driver's statistics (age, length of driving experience, driving history, and then possibilities like tickets, accidents and that goes on and on too).
There are discounts but they don't really do a whole lot sometimes. It would be best to be added to your parents policy. Because they're probably already getting a homeowner's discount, multi-car discount, multi-policy discount, their credit is probably better than yours (yes, that is considered in insurance, only in CA it is not - laws). Plus they've proably been with their company for quite a while and they won't want to change.
I would not suggest going on to your own policy because you'll have a lot going against you. I used to sell car insurance and I quoted rates for a lot of 16 - 21 yr olds who wanted to buy an Eclipse and each one of them was VERY expensive. Even mine was. I bought my Eclipse when I was 22 and only had one ticket and my rates were $285 at the cheapest plus add that to my car payment $425 and gas I was spending almost $1000 monthly just to drive my car.
But, if you really want the car and can make the insurance payments, then please by all means buy it. But if you don't want to work for your car and have almost all your money go to that only, give it a second thought.
Oh, and most insurance companies don't rate as "sports cars" it isn't an option. Its the car's statistics that drive that. BUT most sports cars are generally more expensive to repair/rebuild than a "regular" car. So that's why its easier for them to say "yeah its a sports car"

While I'm still in the heavy "newbie" stage where Eclipse GTs are concerned (just got mine only a month ago), I've been a licensed insurance agent for a few years now. Thus... here's the situation:
There is no real "passenger" vs. "sports car" category list used by insurance companies. Where car rates are concerned, every vehicle is rated with a numerical symbol for insurance purposes. All insurance raters use them and they are fairly well standardized for all insurance companies. The higher the number, the more it's going to cost you.
Now, your older (over 10 years) stock, 4-cylinder family car generally would rate a symbol between 5- 9, or so. A later model or new passenger car might go as high as the mid to high teens. The more expensive or higher performance the car is, the higher the symbol. For example, a Porsche 911 Carerra with all the goodies rates between a 25-27. Same with a Dodge Viper.
The Mitsubishi GT (depending on its age) rates between a 21-25. A 2000 GT rates a 21, whereas a new 2005 rates a 25 symbol.
So... yes... for insurance purposes, they do consider the GT rather high performance, and it's a-gonna cost ya. ;)

i heard that the insurance rates drop off for the 97 GS-T eclipses so they are a lot cheaper than even the 98's, also the GS-T's are faster so i'd look into getting one of those

ok so let me get this straight, the 2 doors on a car doesnt matter as much as the engine? would that mean something like a celica would be cheap enoug hfor me to afford? or would the 2 doors still bring that down also...
eclipsed4utoo
07-15-2005, 11:40 PM
state farm could also consider the celica a sports car. hell if they classify the eclipse as a sports car, then they would probably classify the celica as a sports car.

Once again... there is no "sports car" classification in insurance. And no rating is based on the number of doors a car has, either. Generally speaking, a 2-door car will tend to be more performance oriented than a 4-door and, thus, be given a higher symbol (rating number) than a 4-door.. However, I could point out a ton of 4-door cars that have higher symbol numbers, and thus higher rates, than other 2-doors.
Just another lil' insurance FYI.

I have state farm insurance too, but it is partial coverage so it is much cheaper. I think we pay about $250 for each 6 months, but that's for an 02 GS with about $300 in discounts.
