Transmission Issues

I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport and the transmission seems to be slipping a little. It was doing this several months ago and i had the transmission fluid flushed and changed along with the filter and it began working fine. It just progressively has continued to get as bad as it was before. The other day i noticed what i belived to be a little transmission fluid on the ground under my truck and i checked the levels and it was a low considering it was just replaced not long ago. It seems to only slip when i come to a stop then begin to go again. If anyone has any clues as to what it might be i would greatly appreciate it. The fluid level is just above the add line, but not close to the max fill line. NOt sure if it is the lack of fluid, but if so any clues as to where the leak could be or if i should take it back where it was replaced and have them refill it. Thanks Again for any help on the matter.

well if they replaced the filter in the tranny. then the fluid leak could be coming from the tranny pan gasket. or the bolts that hold the gasket on could be loose. top off teh trans fluid and see if that makes a difference.

In my experience, if your trans starts to slip a fluid and filter change will fix the problem only about half the time.
Either the clutch packs were too badly worn before the service was done, or there is another problem, like a bad transmission pump or a cracked drum, leaking internal seals, etc.
Try putting about 1 oz of clean DOT 3 brake fluid into the transmission. Then add 1/4 pint of trans fluid to wash it down. The brake fluid will swell the internal seals, and might put off a major repair for a while.
IMO the only alternative is a transmission rebuild.

If the new fluid helped before it may help again. A friend of mine was having tranny problems, he changed the fluid every time the problems returned. After 4 changes his trans was fine for the next 150K miles. Seems like the new fluid had to work its way through, then got diluted by the old fluid remaining inside. Once he'd done the 4 changes all the old fluid was out.
It's worth a try, and hella cheaper than a rebuild.

Hi "blue74. Since the car is 186000 km, i recomend you to do a transmission flush and trans..filter change -at the same time-.it works good in cold 'cause the fluid viscosity is higer when cold, when it warms up it looses viscosity causin' it to slep among the tranny components.
PS. also replase all the other fluids(engine oil, transfer case grease, diferentials oil), since-I guess-,you dont know if the former owner ever did it. Good Lluck.

Hi Thanks for reply can you tell me why when the jeep goes in normal temp why the trans shift properly like if i am going and stop at trafic light the trans doesnt shift 1st straight away it takes 5 second to change in first gear.and if the car cold or hot the kickdown dosent work.
Thanks again.
