98 QX4 metallic rattle around 1k and 2.4-3k rpm?

Hello everyone - great forum (I have solved my sticky gas pedal problem just from skimming the posts - thanks for an easy fix to a frustrating problem!).

My other issue is that I have a metallic rattle/scrape on acceleration. It starts in low rpm around 1000 and hits again around the 2400 rpm band. Once outside (either more rpm or less) the particular rpm range it stops. It's been slowly getting slightly worse and does not go away when the engine is warm although it does appear to decrease. It is present with or without the AC on, and whether the car is being driven or is sitting in neutral - so I think the compressor and transmission are ruled out. There has been some press about a similar noise in the 05 pathfinders and frontiers which use the VIAS system but I don't believe that is part of the VG33E engine. It had a cracked right front manifold replaced under warranty a few years ago. It also sounds like it is coming mostly from the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance for your insight and help!

Phil

My 96 pathfinder did the same thing and I found it to be the heat shield on the exhaust next to the tranny.
