rim protector tires

Just got my wife a CPO 04 BMW 325CI coupe with everything, including the Sport Package. This includes a stiffened, lowered suspension and 17" rims with 225/45x17 Pirelli tires. Rides hard and is a bit of rocket; overall feel reminds me of my old Corvette.
I'm concerned about keeping the rims from being scraped on curbs. The rims almost look wider than the tires. There is less than 1/4" of solid rubber "rim protector" on the tires.
What I'd like to know is what brand/model tire in this size has the most protruding rim protection. Alternately, is there a wider, lower profile tire that will fit without chassis/body/suspension interference yet be close to original diameter (25.4") for speedo/odo accuracy. If I could find a carcass that hangs out another half inch or so that would protect the rims.
I'm not hung up on Z or R speed ratings. T (118 mph) would be plenty, and I find lower speed-rated tires wear much longer.
Any suggestions?
