Well, I am not sure if the physical part is the same but you do need one programmed for your engine and tranny.
I have read that the PCM, the antitheft module, and I think it was the remote access module (RAP) all communicate when the vehicle is first assembled at the factory and swap an I.D. code. So when one of those modules is replaced there is a special procedure the dealer goes through so that the new module will be recognized by the other two.
I don't believe you can swap a used one in without a special procedure which the Ford dealer would have to do.
Ford of course will be glad to sell you a new one which will come programmed to your vehicle.
Maybe someone can chime in and confirm the above?
