Can someone explain this problem

Im from hk and although i've been building models since i was 7, scale model cars are still relativly new to me.

my first build was a skyline r34, in mica blue, i finished the car off in tamiya clear coat. it was perfect and shining. Then the guy in the model store recomended me to use polishing compound to get a show car look.
I applied some on my r34 and rubbed gently, the whole area turned matt and no matter what i did after that .....it stayed matt. Thinking that the clear coat could have interfered with the compound, i attempted to polish my mini cooper after a web layer of paint ( i left it to dry for a week before polishing).....it was not as bad as the mica blue but it still matted.

Im currently using "top compound 2000" which the guy says has a finer grit than tamiya "finish" grade polishing compound.........

I've also read primera man's excellent tutorial.......but to no avail

now im building a yellow enzo.......can someone please explain waht i've done wrong........and if i want my enzo to shine, should i just leave it as it is after the wet coat as even gloss coat doesn't rpovide the optimal shine

Hmm... that sounds strange. You might want to try buffing it without the compound at this point and see if that brings back the shine. The problem might be that you're using too much compound and not removing all the residue off the surface thus leaving a film just visible enough the obscure the shine. A good clean, well-worn cotton cloth should do the trick.

first, welcome to AF!

there are a few reasons why your paint has fogged.
1. the clear and or wet coat didnt dry long enough before you started polishing it.you generally want to let the paint cure at least 2 weeks or longer before polishing.

2. you are using to much compound at once and the residue left from the compound is fogging your paint. only use a tiny bit of compound at a time, working small areas of the car. i know that Meguiars Scratch X will fog your paint if you use to much at a time. ive never had this happen to me using Tamiya Compound but have had this happen with other brands. ive never used Top Compound 2000 though.

theres a bit of an art to polishing but it yields great results. you may want to lightly wet sand the body with 2000 grit and then try polishing it again. this should help. good luck
