Well I got in my car today and start it up and I hear this rattling noise. So I'm thinking its in the exhaust or something and dont think anything more of it. Well i go to drive home from school and i dont get more than 2 blocks when all the sudden the fron of the car starts shaking and the front wheels just lock up and skid to a halt. at that point i was pissed off/scared that my tranny went out/ and embarrased because it was in the middle of the road and wouldnt move. so for about 7 minutes im trying to figure out what happened and then i start it back up and it drives almost normal, so i parked it in a stall and waited from someone to follow me home. as im driving home the same thing happens but this time the front wheels were only locked up for abour 30 seconds and then they released and all was good. so i get home and the car smells or burnt rubber and clutch. this being my first awd car i have no idea what the problem could be because the rear wheels didnt lock up or anything just the front. so i have an appointment on wednsday to have it looked at and hopefully fixed with not to much damage to the car or my wallet. do you guys have any idea what the problem might be?

I think it may be your transfer case. Search the forums for the keyword of "transfer case". I remember, seeing something like this asked before. The symptoms were the same (the tires locking up).

EDIT: I went and found it for you.... http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=422036&highlight=transfer+case and http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=415032&highlight=transfer+case

well according to those posts if the t case goes all tired lock up but for me it was just the front tires. im thinking throw out berring but i don tknow why that would cause the tires to lock up
I guess as long as all the major things are ok like the tranny and such then im releived because a throw out berring or clutch is no big deal

i know exactally what it is.....
you have a seven bolt right?
i will say that its a 90% chance its crankwalk. :banghead:
my car did the exact same thing, that rattling is the precusor to it. the rattling is actually a rod nock or spun bearing. basically whats happening is the crank rotates fine then it starts walking in till it thows a rod out of alignment and the motor binds or jams, haulting the rotating assembly and bottom end. you let it sit and everything falls back into place. letting everything run free agian.

with my car tho it walked so bad that it didnt start agian for acouple days. :crying:
im sure jake can back me up on how messed up my 7bolt was. since then the 6 bolt is in there and runnig strong ever since. :grinyes:

im still leaning toward something with the tranny/ driveline because even when the wheels locked the engine reved fine plus the engine thats in there is only about 2 months old and has 50k on it. and only the front wheels locked the rear would try and push it along it was almost like the calipers all of the sudden locked up in the front

could the problem be as simple as low t-case fluid?

ok well basically the only thing that happened was the wheels locked up everything else worked the tranny is fine the clutch is fine but i think i may need a throw out bearing so im pretty sure its the t case but im not positive
